Does being a physicist actually help you do magic tricks? This magician on TV says he also studied physics so I'm guessing it does help.

  11. strat1227
    Date: Wed, Dec 14 2011 02:10:09

Nah actually not really all that much. I just think that if you're the type of person interested in physics, you're probably also the type of person interested in magic. They're correlated but not causational.

haha yeah it's a pretty deceptive move, especially when done really quickly looking back if i had to refilm this I'd just do all the moves set to music, the patter is stupid anyway and just makes the magic not as good because most of these moves are supposed to be done quickly

Woo it went really well :excited: Here's the email I sent to my other magician friend about it :)

Just got back! It went pretty much perfectly. It was the GM and his girlfriend, which ended up being really great because I could do magic for the gf while I talked business with the GM (Though they both seemed really impressed by the magic!) I started off by "printing" my contact info onto a card by using a *********************. Then I did "Chicago Opener" and had the gf find the GM's card then vice versa. Moved on to Dr Daley's Last Card Trick to show them a "short, simple, but still very powerful" trick, that the gf said was her favorite trick. By then I was feeling kind of cocky so I did the coin-through-glass, but of course it didn't work perfectly lol. First time it just kind of flopped out, but I covered well by acting like it was part of the trick, saying "The first time it almost makes it all the way through", then doing it again and it worked perfectly the second time. Then did a coins-across from my hands to the gf hands, both of them were floored by that lol. They seemed to really like the coin magic and asked for more, so I did a standard matrix, and by then they were sold. We only talked business for a couple of minutes because the GM by that point was already planning out "Magic Mondays", he said he just has to talk to the owner to get it okayed :)

@strat1227 Simply awesome. I definitely like the new one better with the lingo and all. I really liked the very end when you made the coin disappear. :D Also, your card trick post earlier in this thread isn't very impressive. We should be able to see the deck at all times. Otherwise, we will assume whoever shuffled the deck (and who saw the card) simply took the card out of the deck and put it in the wallet. Far more impressive if we see the deck at all times.

except there's no one actually there lol, I just set the deck on a table and then picked the wallet up off the table. that trick is designed to be done IRL to real people so i was just trying to simulate that for the camera. the person I'm doing the trick to wouldn't pull their card out and put it into their own wallet haha Thanks supergirl :)

watch again, look at my wrists, they rotate 180 degrees, there's no where it could possibly be balanced unless i tossed it up as i rotated my arms and it landed back on the other side (which some people can do, but not me lol)

Every motion I do is part of the trick .... Every motion of every trick is part of it, nothing happens for no reason ... I don't get why people feel like they have to guess things, just watch and enjoy. and if you don't enjoy, don't watch lol

tbh he usually performs it better than that, this was a little sloppy haha. it doesnt matter much though since it's a "sloppy" style of presentation it's a good routine. he won gold in the international magic competition with that routine. i agree his routine is too loose can you match his routine tho

  148. strat1227
    Date: Tue, Dec 11 2012 02:43:31

I could do all the sleights required, but I can't act that good, and I can't do any of the juggling he did. Not just with the 4 balls, but like throwing the ball up and catching it in the cup which he's holding in his mouth, etc. There's only like 2 sleights required for this routine haha, it's not the "magic" that makes this routine good

Zombo wrote: how can you win the award of the year on only 2 sleights, thats weak
Because 99% of magic is presentation. You (a non-magician) don't know what sleights he is or isn't doing, it doesn't change what you see. If he did that same exact routine with 50 really really hard sleights, it doesn't make it any better or worse. Actually it does make it kind of worse because it's more likely to go wrong. Your logic is exactly backwards lol

The point is to be the "best magician", not "best at magic" if that makes any sense. A good magician can do a self-working trick and make it look like a miracle. Someone really really good at sleight of hand can do actual miracles and make them look boring. Magic is inherently for the masses, it's an entertainment art. The way spinning has developed, it's not designed at ALL to be appealing to non-spinners. Ask any non-spinner to watch a battle or CV and they'll say it all looked the same If magicians were like that, we'd never get paid. If competitions were as you described, we'd inherently be hindering ourselves, and our routines would become really really bad to watch for spectators, which defeats the whole purpose of magic.

but who's gonna push teh limits of magic if not for the highest level fo competition? seems like it would be their responsability and imo magic for the masses is a bastardization, its a commercial dumbed down version. real magic should be about dexterity and ingenuity of deception. im sure theres nothing more satisfying than deceiving an expert magician. we can do the same thing for pen spinning too; a commercial version thats easy to perform live and looks good, and technical spinning that push the limits.

  156. Awesome
    Date: Tue, Dec 11 2012 17:50:13

I don't think its their responsibility to push the technical limits of their craft but rather to provide entertainment value for the community they live in. The pushing the technical limits is just for masturbatory comments and ego stroking anyway. If they want to push the technical limits thats great but if not no big deal imo. Someone is always gonna come up with new stuff to perform anyway.

Zombo wrote: but who's gonna push teh limits of magic if not for the highest level fo competition? seems like it would be their responsability and imo magic for the masses is a bastardization, its a commercial dumbed down version. real magic should be about dexterity and ingenuity of deception. im sure theres nothing more satisfying than deceiving an expert magician. we can do the same thing for pen spinning too; a commercial version thats easy to perform live and looks good, and technical spinning that push the limits.

What you're saying is like saying that the grammys should be for most technically skilled musician and not best music. Yes that is important, but no it's not the point. Magic can't really be compared to penspinning, magic has a documented history for hundreds of years and it has a huuuge amount of people doing it professionally and as a hobby. The boundaries are inherently being pushed, if only because of the free-market aspect of it. A lot of people have made a veeery good living creating and selling new magic. There are competitions and awards for the "move monkeys" (people who don't care about performing, just work on sleights), but they're not as popular or important because they're pretty much antithetical to the point of magic EDIT: In the end, the "invisible hand" will kind of guide what's necessary. The point is to come up with an amazing routine, if that can be accomplished with technical prowess, that will be developed. If it can be accomplished with simple sleights but great acting/presentation, then that will happen too. This guy happened to win this year, but last year it was INSANE sleight of hand that won. The "method" is completely irrelevant to magicians, all that matters is what you've produced.

  158. strat1227
    Date: Tue, Dec 11 2012 18:02:08

So like if magicians judged pen spinning competitions, if one person made a really beautiful combo using only fundamentals, that'd win every time to an ugly combo that's really hard. They consider the second one completely pointless and stupid. Why do something hard if it turns out ugly? If you do something hard and it turns out pretty, then great, but if it's less pretty than something easy then it's a waste. The point is to produce something amazing, how you do it isn't important.

  159. Zombo
    Date: Tue, Dec 11 2012 19:17:28

a hard and nice routine should beat a easy and nice routine i cant believe this guy won because his presentation was not that good, the crazy gestures dont really add much value. I actually thought it was a tough routine because some of the ball hiding was done after linking to some contact juggling moves, like very fluid. but if you say those sleights are really easy, then the routine is worthless imo.
