General Discussion / Breaking a habit

Ok so this thread is here to address a number of things. 1. to address one of my annoying habits that's preventing me from doing some tricks. 2. to teach other spinners to do the same or to overcome anything they cant seem to shake off about their spinning in general 3. to stop this flood of "problem with my hands" threads about how the OP cant bend 1 finger without bending another or something I'll be honest... 90% of this thread is going to be me PRACTICING and WORKING HARD at the issue at hand... there's not going to be a ton of little tips and tricks that can fix a whole style in a day. If you want to change something , to change a habit or a style, to remove some sort of limitation your muscle memory is setting on you... you need to work for it! So here's my case: I've got this thing where if i've got a spider spin or anything moving on the knuckle side of my fingers in a reverse direction and I try to lift up my middle finger, my pinky finger lifts up too, as if to catch a MA 23-24 (which i do A LOT of... hence this habit building)... so this stops me from being able to do a few advanced spiderspin or one of the tricks here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyRBHBjvygU&feature=feedu , i believe the one i mean is mirrored pp rev, ill edit this when im home and can double check the video. so what am i gonna do about it? put up a thread in the hand care section, bitching about how i cant bend my fingers the right way, asking for some sort of magic solution? give up on doing the tricks all together? no =\ ima WORK AT IT! over the next week or so, I'll be practicing this almost 100% of the time, posting the occasional video (minimum 1/day) as to how my progress is. The reason im doing this is to show people that this is a GRADUAL PROCESS and even at my level, it requires a lot of work... there will be no point where one day i cant do it, then the next i can do it 100% of the time. here's how bad i am at it today

update: between 2 and 5 hours since my last video... ive had about 30 mins worth of practice so far can already see my pinky is being more responsive worked out the timings a little bit better at this point i just need to screw around with 1 and 2, then i'll move on to moving 3 up and finishing the trick one thing that I do want to get across: this is not a physical limitation... as i've demonstrated... my fingers can move like that, it's not like my hand isnt build to do it the same goes for 90% of the "my hand cant do this" threads, where your hand can do it, you just havnt taught it how the other 10% is pretty much yeah... you cant do that... nobody can do that... it's not used in any tricks...

@Pen Ninja, I had those "habitual finger movements" moments as well when I tried some of Vicgotgame's tricky fingered links so I feel for you. :) So I practiced until I got them and now I can do smoother hybrids on my 34 and 23 area. Though, I don't get how you reverse power pass. -_- So pro.... T_T

after about 30 min or so practice at work, 30 min or so playing with keeping my pinky bent and stretching 1 and 2 out at work as well got home and did nothing for 3 hours, then recorded the above... i really like this one, i havnt done it yet but hey, check out how much better ive gotten already my pinky finger is much more obedient and all i really need to do is push my self to uncurl 3 I think i might get it next vid if only once

just managed to pull this off at work THE JOURNEY DOES NOT END HOWEVER! doing a trick once DOES NOT MEAN you can do the trick i'll be working on this until I have it fairly consistent

this is awesome, it's exciting to watch a great spinner document their progress! there's a lot you can learn by understanding the practice methods of the greats by the way, is that a starcraft mousepad? and a shirt in the second video? are you good at sc2? :)
