I don't know if they're cheap in Japan but these are things he should look out for: G3's Japanese Dr. Grip Shaker Dr. Grip G-spec Signo DX's Colortwin's HGG's Metallic Gels Needlepoints Not sure if everything can be found there but yeah.

Your friend is right. But as for Dr. Grips, only the American MPs were discontinued (along with the obvious Just Meets and other rare ones)...I think. Just because they're out of production doesn't mean there aren't any more to go around. They produce a shitload of pens a day.
