General Discussion / World Tournament '11 - Community Registration and Rulebook

Official Website: http://www.worldpenspinning.com/ Registration information This is for COMMUNITY registration, not SPINNER registration! We do not register individual spinners, only which community will send spinners for the WT11. Each community must provide us with a contact person. This person will be in charge of communicating our information to its community. We will communicate by e-mail. Similar to the WT09, each community must request a number of spots. The minimum number of spots per community is Two (2). The maximum number of spots per community is Eight (8). You must request a number of spots according to the number of world-class (elite) spinners from your community that will participate. We will try to accommodate every request. The number of total spots available for the tournament is likely to be around 80-100. Something new to this WT11: when you are submitting your final spinners list (in December 2010 or January 2011), you will need to rank your own spinners. In other words, you must order your spinners from strongest to weakest. For example, if you are sending 8 spinners to the tournament, your list must specify which spinner you consider the #1, #2, #3, #4, etc... #8 of your own community. In addition, each community must form a judging committee who will judge for the whole competition. The minimum number of members in the judging committee is Two (2). Send the following information, by e-mail to [[email protected]][email protected] or by posting in this thread: 1. Community name and link to your forum 2. Contact person information: name and e-mail 3. Requested number of spots (between 2-8) 4. List of top spinners from your board with video links. (Ideally, you should list more spinners than spots requested) 5. Estimated number of judges your board can provide (minimum 2) You should register as soon as possible. This is especially important if you are a small board to guarantee your participation. You can update your registration information later on so don't worry about being accurate or complete. Crash and I will be actively seeking registration from communities, but we don't have contact with every board. So it's important that you register yourself to confirm your presence. There is no fixed deadline for registration for now. ------------------------------------------- Tournament information The first rulebook draft is available:: http://upsb.info/WT11/wt11rules.pdf (PDF) | http://upsb.info/WT11/wt11.doc (DOC)
A detailed rulebook will be available later on, which will be translated in all major languages. For now, here are the main ideas for the WT11: 1. First round: the first round will be divided into 8 groups. There will be around 8 to 12 spinners per group. The top 4 of each group will advance to the next round. This means 32 spinners in total will advance to the second round. The groups will be selected randomly, but with some restrictions. Each group cannot contain more than 2 spinners from the same community. Furthermore, we will be using the ranking lists from each community to balance the groups. 2. Later rounds: There will be 32 spinners at the start of round 2. From this round onward, the tournament follows a traditional 1vs1 elimination format. From round 1, 8 spinners will have placed as #1 of their group, 8 will have placed as #2 of their group, etc. for #3 and #4. When determining match ups for round 2, we will randomly match #1s against #4s and #2s against #3s. 3. There will be 6 rounds in total. Each round, spinners will have 2 weeks to film. Judging will take 1 week, with the exception of round 1 which can take up to 2 weeks. 4. Judging system has not been determined yet. Judging must consider all aspects of pen spinning and it is the spinner considered best overall which will win each match.
If you have any questions, please ask. ------------------------------------------- Lineups Received NLPSC LPSA SPSB SPSC JEB PSH SPC THPSC HKPSA MYPSC PPSC GPC UPSB TWPS PPP BRPSB BPSC
Registered Communities SPSC FPSB UPSB TWPS PPP NLPSC BRPSB BPSC PPSC MYPSC GPC JEB SPSB LPSA HKPSA THPSC SPC KPSA PSH
at the request of BaiMai I did a few more "gradings" of regular spins by some THPSC spinners to give an idea. this is really informal so don't take it too seriously. Supawit127 Execution: 5/5 -> supawit is one of the smoothest spinners out there. I think I only saw one video of him where he's not smooth. Difficulty: 4/5 -> typically very difficult tricks, but not difficult linkages enough to warrant 5/5 Creativity: 0/5 -> rarely attempts anything, if he does I don't think its worth more than 1-2/5 Presentation: 2.5/5 linkages need some work -1.5, needs more variety -1 11.5/20 BaiMai Execution: 2.5/5, not the smoothest spinner out there, but gets the job done, hence average grade Difficulty: 2.5/5, usually contains one or two difficult tricks, but quite average too Creativity: 3/5 At his best, makes multiple good use of creative elements for 3/5. Sometimes uses original elements, but never to good use, so no points can be awarded there. Presentation: 2/5 Linkages are not that great -2 appearance of the hands / pen sometimes not polished -1 total: 10/20 I give peem around 11/20 (5-5-0-1)

hey Zombo, it would be interesting to see which spinner you would give like let's say at least 15/20 points.

someone talked about s777 lets see execution: 2-4/5, i don't think he's the smoothest guy out there and does have the tendency to make a major mistake once in a while. also he has some pacing issues, he likes to spin slow, but sometimes he stays slow for too long and its not appropriate for the tricks he's doing. difficulty: 4-5/5, one of the few guys who has the potential for both difficult tricks and linkages. a video needs both to get 5/5, otherwise its more 4/5 creativity: 2-4/5, sometimes he pulls off something completely new, most of the time he does try to be at least creative in some way. presentation: 4/5 sometimes he makes weird decisions on structure, overthinks his combos. -1 12-17/20 is his score, I find him inconsistent hence the large gap, but at his maximum, he's very solid. Stuhl execution: 4/5 never a mistake, quite smooth however might have some pacing issues difficulty: 2-3/5 average or above average usually creativity: 3-5/5 at his lowest, stuhl always makes creativity a central focus of his combo. at his best, the elements shown are actually original (totally new). one the rare guys that can pull off 5/5 presentation: 1-3/5 often criticized for not polishing his hand and fingers appearance -1 to -2, linkages not always that good -1,2 10-15/20 gollumsk8 execution: 3-5/5 his execution can be a bit laborious sometimes, in other times its perfect. his pacing is very very good difficulty: 4-5/5 sometimes doesn't have the difficult tricks, but his linkages are always superb creativity: 0-2/5 not the most creativie spinner, but does make the attempt to keep it fresh presentation: 4-5/5 sometimes criticized for lack of variety -1 11-16/20 eriror execution: 2-3/5 unfortunately, frequently makes a major mistake in his combos difficulty: 3-4/5 not overly difficult tricks, solid linkages, above average here creativity: 0-2/5 makes the attempt here and there with some success presentation: 4-5/5 sometimes criticized for lack of variety -1 9-14/20 vicgotgame execution: 3-4/5 not the top in smoothness, but no problem either difficulty: 4-5/5 one of the rare guys with difficult linkages + tricks at the same time creativity: 0-2/5 has shown flashes of brillance, but not frequently presentation: 3-4/5 criticized for a lack of distinctive style -1, sometimes the hand appear a bit brutish when handling power tricks. -1 total: 10-15/20

There are 3 wildcard spots which will be assigned to individual spinners, regardless of their board. To apply for one of these spots, send a video to [email protected] of one of your combos (25 secs max). These spots will be distributed after Dec 31st, 2010.

What about the judging in the tournament? The wildcard spinners can get one more vote than the others if they don't have their own community with judges.

39. Zombo
Date: Sun, Dec 26 2010 12:56:46

if they don't have their own community, then either a random judge will not evaluate that spinner or that spinner's votes are normalized (eg multiplied by a fraction)

the world tournament website says that initial groups are organized alphabetically, what happened to the first sort by using Community ranking of spinners?

'The composition of each group is sorted in alphabetical order.' hmm, does it mean that the groups will be listed/announced in alphabetical order? (as in the groups are determined themselves by community rankings, but when they are announced the spinners are stated in alphabetical order)

It was never intended for that ranking data to be publicly revealed on the official website. some communities chose to publish it, that's fine

45. neoknux_009
Date: Sat, Jan 15 2011 14:41:49

@Zombo so whats the purpose of the ranking? It cant be just for the sake of showing if it was never intended to be relvealed.

46. Zombo
Date: Sat, Jan 15 2011 14:56:38

its used for assigning each spinner to a group and ensuring the groups are balanced.

47. neoknux_009
Date: Sat, Jan 15 2011 15:09:45

wait ... i get it now. NVM . i thought you wernt using the ranking at all, sorting all the spinners in alpa order, then creating groups by whomever is next. the actual groups, after sorting using the rank, is then sorted using alpha order. OK.

48. Zombo
Date: Sat, Jan 15 2011 15:19:09

that would be a most retarded way to assign groups :P
