everything is composed of tiny strings that vibrate at different frequencies. there are parallel universes and they are separated by thin membranes and when they hit each other, that's basically the big bang. (i think) string theory is also probably the only thing that can explain how gravity goes together with electromagnetic forces, weak nuclear force, and strong nuclear force. there are 11 dimensions in the universe. (some say 10 or 9)

If you want to learn more about string theory, watch Brian Greene's documentary or read his book. In any case, in brief, string theory is a beautiful idea that could solve the holy grail of physics: unite Einstein's laws of the very big (General Relativity) and the laws of the very small (Quantum Mechanics). Currently, when the two are mixed together, it gives bullshit like negative or infinite probabilities. But it's required to understand things that are both big and small (ie: black holes, big bang). It's just that the theory is very controversial, and one must be careful: it's very very very hard to prove by experiment, if it's even possible. And if it can't be proven, it's religion, not science.
