kk I know some (/most?) of you have read it in school. I got 3 prompts to choose from.

Spoiler 1. "Their Eyes Were Watching God is essentially a critical indictment of the role and voice of African American women in the 1930s as well as integral part of the Harlem Renaissance movement and its goals."*Defend/Attack/Qualify this statement, using direct evidence from the novel and the analysis by Washington and Gates before and after the text in the novel (the commentary at the beginning and end of the text). 2. The novel studies a quest for voice, yet Janie is silent at critical moments of her life. Trace the role of silence in the novel and how that role changes throughout the novel. Consider whether speech is a mechanism for control and a vehicle for liberation. 3. Consider the last*5 lines of the book and compare them with the first two paragraphs. How do the beginning and end relate to one another, if at all, and what threads do they pull together which have been woven throughout the novel?
What did you guys take from the novel? Main themes in your opinion?
