Well, MS word, publisher, excel and powerpoint are the obvious good ones. Then you want anti virus - I suggest avast. Then other than the essentials you could have uTorrent which is good for filesharing. Download steam if you like gaming. Adobe photoshop cs5 is good to have. Eh there's lots more but you'd better specify what type of programs would you want. Gaming/Educational/Fun/Artistic Hope I helped in the slightest.

The only really essential ones are drivers and security like anti virus and fire wall.

@nateiskewl ninite and flux really helped. Ok, now that I have the basics (AV, IM, browser, player, pic and vid editor, flash, java, 7zip, Ccleaner, defragger) I need some games so that I can test out the graphics of my laptop. Any OFFLINE games to recommend? I'm getting Bioshock and Bioshock 2 now. :D

All this talk of Antivirus.... You kids need to stop Google-ing "free porn" and clicking on random links..... And instead of iTunes, MediaMonkey or even Anapod. iTunes is a plague. Games, get Emulators. High end games just drain the battery and a laptop keyboard just sucks for gaming.

does it really make a diff? cant you adjust brightness manually or is it not about brightness, more about color?

@SJ It's more about color. The screen takes on a sort of orange tone. Try it out, although it does take a while to get used to. And I guess I can tell you tomorrow morning if it makes a difference XD damn ninite is pretty cool too :O
