I think a more pertinent question is why did the road get crossed by the chicken? By virtue of its presence, the road had just as important role in the crossing as the chicken itself. The seemingly passive voice of the version I proposed may not be as passive as it may first seem. (Its like a game figuring out what I mean when I am not high ;D)

i get that, i took this quiz once and you had to have the chicken cross the raod without moving, i was the onlyone in my class who could figurte it out, it was an itouch app at our school its was some sort of creativivty test, actually i dunnoeven know if it was an itouch,, it was som sort off touvchscreen and you had to move the road not the chicken
