UPSB v4

General Discussion / World Tournament 2011 Spinner Selection

Date: Mon, Jun 28 2010 05:31:11

Although WT11 will not start for another ~1/2 a year, it doesn't hurt to begin selecting the spinners representing UPSB early. With all this time, you'll get the chance to practice and prepare for next year. I will be the manager for UPSB during this WT, and so here is the general idea of how the selection will work. There will be 6 spinners that will represent UPSB; 3 have already been selected and invited... the remaining 3 spots will be open to wildcard spinners. So that means anyone who is native to UPSB can have the chance to be in the WT by obtaining one of these 3 wildcard positions. As some of you may know, WT11 will require each community to rank their spinners... so these wildcard spots will determine the spinners for the #4, #5, and #6 ranks. In order to enter yourself for one of these wildcard positions, you must submit a combo. This combo will not be revealed to the public so you may re-use it for something else; the only people viewing the combos will be moderators/administrators. If you wish to release it, of course you are welcome to, but we won't force you to. Time limit: 15-25 seconds Deadline: November 14th Submit to: [email protected] The final spinner list must be submitted sometime in December or January, so the deadline will be in November -- giving the other mods and myself some time to review the clips carefully to choose the best spinners possible. And so with that said, I wish you all the best of luck!!

Yea screw eriror, we don't need Eriror [/sarcasm] :faceplam: unlesss... He's not spinning anymore? My predictions: Eriror Vic Baaron Penja Teotoko (?) Charlie

woops I just forgot about UPSB's best spinner (IMO), I feel ashamed. Then I say vic eriror and penja or baaron in top 3. then penja or baaron (whoever isn't in top 3), teotoko, and iColor (yes, iColor:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfB-GMMfdJA ) in the wild card spots.

Eriror said he is going to participate in the WT'11, as of now. Are multiple entries possible? I mean, can I send a vid, and if I manage to get a better one send it to replace the old one?

Yeah, sure, you may send as many clips as you want up until the due date. And the 3 invites are vic, pen ninja, and eriror (no point in hiding it since most people probably can guess this) i do not have everyone's confirmation that they will be participating though

those combos from iColor are pretty and all, charges full and complete and all that... but the difficulty isnt nearly enough for WT, no offence iColor

I would say a great team would be: EK Vic Penja Baaron Charlie JE (If he changes his angle) In the world of world class spinners it would really be difficult to beat them with all the other stuff like power tricking and smoothness and whatever 'cause UPSB doesn't have spinners who can power trick like peem or ultimate combos like s777 (no offence to anyone). I would say the best way for a UPSB spinner to win the WT is through creativity. Charlie, Baaron and JE are real creative spinners and Vic and Penja are strong spinners with a good grasp of power tricks with a lot of creative linkages as well. Don't need to say why EK is in.

If I may ask, how are intra-community rankings going to decide pooling, especially if each community sends a different amount of people?

It'll be divided as evenly as possible. It wont' be perfect cause each community is sending a different amount of spinners like you said, but it'll be made to be as even as possible

i wouldnt say that. i think ek is at high level who can compete with/beat anyone. Vic can probably beat peem if he keeps doing his crazy linkages + peems power tricks. Id probably place in delta, though im not sure whats his activity atm.

I wanted him to be in WT11 and I wanted him to represent UPSB, so I PM'd him to ask him about it... I was going to invite him, but he didn't want to. And if he may try to participate, he wants to represent VNPSB -- inwhich case, that's VNPSB's manger's job to place him into their team. --That's just everything he told me :dunno: he knows we support him and want him to represent UPSB, but he's already said no :\

in the end, the WT is an individual competition, so each spinner is playing for himself. it doesn't matter if Chau is playing for VNPSB or UPSB, first and foremost he should be playing for himself.

id say Shadowserpent shuold still be in. Skill isnt everything in pen spinning. sometimes a combo is just more appealing and at the end of the day spinners are presenting what theyve got. from my persepctive, really shadowserpent is probably one of the most appealing styles in the world atm. so he deserves a spot in that regard. id like to see how he evolves in a major tournament, and its nice to see a mixture of spinners of different abilities.

46. Pen Ninja
Date: Fri, Aug 13 2010 08:22:16

he would need some sort of difficulty and variety, so far to me, all his combos look the same and theyre all so easy difficulty isnt everything but MOAR style becomes pointless after a certain point

im 100% confident mystic can compete, espeically if i can... last combo i saw from him (that i remember) was vs me, and we were essentially equal, so if i make it, he should still shadowserpant: no his spinning sure is pretty but when ur hardest trick in a combo is "counter twisted sonic", thats just not WT level

Hm... I haven't seen any of teo's more recent videos and I thought he took a break or something, but I guess if many people say teo's linkages have a lotta difficulty.. then I guess I'm wrong. Then again, I haven't watched too many of simplex's most recent vids either... just based that off of what I remembered from them a few months ago. (can't remember everyone's spinning specifically :\) but i still agree with song, i don't think teo (or simplex for that matter) are ready for WT-- if he does make in, unfortunately, imo he'd be in the lower tier... (but that aside, i'm a big fan of teo's spinning.. i don't wanna make it sound like i don't like his spinning, i love his spinning ^^; )

70. Archermitch

I definitely want at least these three spinners in WT: 1) Penja 2) Baaron 3) Vicgotgame I'd like to think that skill difficulty isn't everything in competition. Although simple appeal may not be enough to carry someone like Shadowserpant, his creativity will. And I'm not a fan of continuous tricks in combos in the first place, which I'm sure I'll be seeing all too much of already. :/

aerial, body and environment, two hands, creativity... i think those...maybe others, but we shouldn't be getting off topic. I definitely agree with Zombo. WT10 is still several months away. I think spots are still hard to decide, so that gives time people to practice or do nothing. I think it should get clearer as time goes by.

76. Hippo2626
Date: Thu, Aug 19 2010 08:53:48

I got to disagree with you're argument. Ponkotu cloaks his combo with creativity which overshadows the difficulty aspect of his combos as he did in WC. Creativity will be a great part of winning a battle in the WT. Those that are participating in the WC would already have a high standard of spinning technical wise. Since they all have a high level of the technical skill, the artistic side would normally determine who would win. Ponkotu is actually a very strong technical spinner, if you've seen somee of his videos like the vicgotgame mod test, he has a high proficiency level in power tricking as well. The problem with Ponkotu is that he dwells in the artistic side far too much!. too a point that he disregards a lot of the technical stuff. If he were to change his structure of his combos just a bit he could very well win the WT

Bad JC. But i always really enjoyed shadowserpant's spinning, he doesnt have the highest difficulty but he has some difficulty in his combos and he pulls it off very well, and has a nice variety which is very appealing, so i would like to see him in WT11 ;D

90. TEK
Date: Fri, Oct 8 2010 06:48:23

I see a clear difference between being confident with our choices and settling with others. There are very few spinners on upsb that are truly world class level, such as Vicgotgame (Winner of UPSB WT), Pen Ninja (runner up), Eriror (very experienced). These people, we would feel confident about. This is only my opinion, i would say baaron, mystic, and jamie are up there too but not quite as confident as the first 3 probably due to lack of experience. (meaning they've never been in such a big high level tournament before, not necessarily meaning lack of skill) As for just settling with a "good choice" yet probably not WT level, i would mention the rest of the people you guys have. teo, simplex, AwonW, Resonance... But who knows really, anyone can get super good quickly. The WT is a long ways away! Random comments: As for Chau...I know this is an individual based tournament but i just thought it was funny how, when he lived in Vietnam, he spun for UPSB. Now that he lives in the states, he spins for VNPSB. @shadow I dont think anyone was really trying to hate on your spinning. They were just trying to say that you might not be the best choice for this kind of tournament. Someone mentioned earlier that they think vic is able to beat peem. I agree too. Peem is an incredibly great spinner however he does lack an overall appealing style. Also lacks linkage variety and originality in "normal" spinning. Vic is not as good as peem in power, yet he is still one of the best power spinners...meaning, HE CAN DO THEM AS WELL! As far as linkages, originality, and style, there are few that can match. Hopefully those aspects will be good enough to win the WT! Or beat peem at least... Can't wait!

Date: Fri, Oct 8 2010 09:15:29

Totally agree with everything TEK said. No offence to Peem but I think many spinners can beat him now unless he ups his spinning in all the other areas. I wasn't around during the WT'09 but I think the main reason he won was because that was when the "power trick" revolution started and Peem was the catalyst. Now I think creativity and originality is starting to interest everyone (because of the WC I suppose), plus, the awareness for a combo to encompass every aspect of PSing has grown tremendously. Peem is creative (in power tricking contexts) but his combos (minus the power tricks), well, lets just say even I can copy them. I suspect the winner of the WT next year would be someone who can produce great combos constituting all the technicalities of PSing like S777, Eriror or Vic and can bring something new to the mix of PSing like Freeman or Ponkotu for every battle would win it ('least for me anyway). I think I drifted off from what I wanted to say and missed out some other stuff but oh well... Ill add them later (if I remember). Just my personal opinion

it sounds as though people don't expect peem to pull anything 'new' in next WT. (after all, he only releases videos every few months...maybe in WT11 he won't need 'filler' material and non-repetitive combos ==). i think variety, creativity will play a greater role in WT11 than in WT09 (it's about time xD), but it's possible the 'power' seen in WT09 was only the tip of the iceberg, and the 'creativity' seen in WC10 is only the beginning. high expectations? yes. some time ago i remember reading something about reaching the 'limit of one's style'. in this WT, pushing past this limit into different 'styles' may be the key (no idea what i just said lol) about UPSB spinners, it might not only be about who can 'get good very quickly', but about who has the most material hidden away for future use too, and if anyone hits a 'wall' to improvement. time is ticking away... also hopefully this time there'll be no 'OMG he went over time by 0.5 seconds' arguments.

I for a fact know peem will come up with one or multiple "new" power tricks for the WT. That is inevitable, however that might not be enough to win it. Especially if he will face hard opponents most of his rounds. And peem cant always come out with full FLTA videos every time. Its not only originality and variety a single combo but originality and variety all rounds or else people will be like "yeah thats cool but he did that the last two rounds". Peem is good and i respect him a lot, but im trying to be realistic. Also, a full fl combo has already been done before so i probably wont have nearly the same reaction as the first, even if it is better. But who knows too, peem is one crazy spinner.... And yes, very very high expectations :)

94. Zombo
Date: Fri, Oct 8 2010 14:45:26

just to get an idea, this is how I imagine Peem's grade for a regular combo for him. Like a regular WT tournament for him where he doesn't do anything more execution: 5/5, spinnerpeem has flawless execution difficulty: 4/5, no hard linkages, if theres some really hard linkages between power tricks, which does happen quite often, its 5/5 creativity: often 0/5 no attempt of creativity. if he shows a new trick, its usually a variation of an old trick but pushed to the extreme like punkan. in that case 2/5 presentation: -1 ou -2 pour lack of variety, bad structure (often unbalanced combos), poor/boring linkages -1 ou -2. 1-3/5 total: 10-13/20 for his usual spin. so yeah you can see he has a lot to improve, but so does everybody else. the judging system allows a lot of leeway for improvement. the idea is that of the tournament is that, ideally, the winner of the tournament sohuld be the #1, best spinner in EVERY aspect. Since this is obviously unfeasible, we know that each spinner has their own strenghts and weaknesses. The goal then, is to find a spinner who is #1, best spinner in SOME aspects and at least ABOVE AVERAGE in its WEAKEST aspects. We look for someone that is so good at everything, you can't really find a good weakness to criticize them on. With peem its too easy to find his flaws, it must not be that easy to find for the world champion.

While the due date is still the 14th, I'd say there may be a slight chance for an extended due date. I've been without a computer for 2 weeks now and have been using my iPod for internet (mainly just email) so I haven't really been able to sort anything through for the WT in terms of spinners/judges. I still need more judges btw, and for those who have e-mailed me concerning the position so far, I will present you a few clips for you to judge so your judging ability can be gauged. But again, I will do that when I get my laptop back. Supposedly, I'm suppose to get it back Friday, but I wouldn't be surprised if it took longer than that. I also will not have internet over this next weekend because I will be on a retreat to the middle of nowhere in the woods of New Hampshire. So I'm sorry to have to push this back further (or maybe not, we'll see), but I've been extremely inconvenienced without a computer/laptop these few weeks :(

a lot of the public either: probably don't have enough experience to judge the difficulty of linkages tricks (this is for world tournament, not some friendly battle lol), and/or they probably can't be bothered looking at the combos in depth, slow-motioning them etc. subtle difficulty is big nowadays, also remember the public's vote may not take into consideration all the WT11 criteria

the process has sort of moved on to an "interview" phase with potential candidates, we want to really determine what's their potential and make sure we make the right decision. it's really not easy.

Do you have a time estimate?

171. Twine
Date: Mon, Dec 6 2010 04:12:21

Ideal team imo: Vicgotgame Eriror Penja Baaron Teotoko Jamie / i.suk / AwonW

you forgot penja @Twine and im pretty teotoko is inactive now but no worry we got good candidates

173. Twine
Date: Mon, Dec 6 2010 04:16:42

lol woops, Penja is meant to be above the trio >.< That's really disappointing about teotoko. He truly was a prodigy (well at lease for UPSB). Like he had that naturally awesome style, good links. Aww man he was one of my favorite spinners!

I'm sorry guys for the delay, but as Zombo's said, we have made it more of an interview I suppose. While we know some spinners have the potential ability, the videos they sent us didn't show us what we would like have seen from them...things that we know they could possibly do -- and so because of that, we have asked a few people to send us additional videos to redisplay their strengths and see if they are a more suitable candidate after that. (We are still waiting on these videos before we decide) With that said though... we have come to a conclusion on some of the wildcard spinners. Here is the lineup so far. Vicgotgame Pen Ninja Erirornal Kraione Baaron Jamie Enns So we are just debating over who should take the last spot (Jamie will be on the team though with either the 5th or 6th spot.)

simplex never submitted a video, and I believe he is pretty inactive right now? Same goes for the comments about teo

Bah. That blows. Teos' one of my fav pen spinners. He put on quite a show in the UPSB tourny. Imo, he was just on the edge to taking out Eri and Vic.

well they might hav ebeen the best spinners 6-7 months ago, that does not mean they're still the best now. it changes fast. we need recent vids to evaluate

hmmm dont think we have seen his vid, but we have plenty of very good candidates for that last spot, which makes it very very hard to decide, thats why we're kinda conducting interviews theres at least 4 candidates for the last spot
