Off-topic / Golf anyone?

I know golf isn't nearly as popular as say, football or soccer, but I was wondering if anyone here plays. My full swing shots are horribly inconsistent and have been screwing up my performance recently, but I usually shoot somewhere around bogey golf. I shoot low 30s for 9 holes at my local, crappy, short, par 60 course. No, I'm not good at golf.

Lol, yeah, I play for my school team. :)

O: what do you usually shoot? and seeing that you're in norcal (i am too), what school do you play for?
-
Date: Fri, Apr 1 2011 06:51:24
I shoot in the mid 70's normally. My index is 4.5 D: I play for Mission San Jose High, we're not too good, but good for our league at least.

THATS HELLLAAAAAAAAA GOOD and okay you aren't anywhere in my region. in my league at least

Well, I started pretty early and I practice regularly so that's to be expected I guess. :P I notice you live around SJ? What school do you go to?
-

Monta Vista, in cupertino. i started early too but i dont practice regularly lol. i guess bogey golf is what i get :/ i wish i had the time to practice regularly D:

Ohhh the Asian Monta Vista. Never played them before... we played the other Monta Vista, they are pretty legit. Bogey golf's not terrible. It'd be enough to make bottom of varsity at my school. You shot in the 80's a few times probably. What's your home course? I might or might not have played it, no matter how crappy it is.

Our home course is Deep Cliff Golf Course. It's a really flat, short, par 60 course with very very very very (did i mention "very"?) slow greens. Because we play there so much, our putting everywhere else tends to be pretty bad (though my putting is quite solid). Unfortunately for us, other teams get like free access to tough, pretty, and overall nice full length courses. Last year, our home course was Saratoga Country Club, which was pretty legit, but they kinda shut us off this year so they can maintain their course :/ I need to fix my full swing, it's really killing me...I shot 50 for 9 holes at Summitpointe (par 36) yesterday :\ Tough course is tough, but my full shots cost me so much :[ The sad part was, I got the third best score...out of six golfers. Our numbers 1 and 2 tied at +10 .______. (though they're usually much better) If you ever play MV in golf, expect a win lol -------- EDIT: so mission sj high is in fremont, how deceiving. if you ever come in the cupertino/saratoga/sunnyvale/san jose area, i wanna golf with you lol. its always nice to play with a stronger player :]

Deep Cliff.... I don't think I've played there actually. Slow greens? Oh boy. Yeah, it's pretty hard to adjust from slow to fast greens. I find it easier to go from fast to slow greens... just grip a little harder. :P I really want a private course as a home base. They're always in perfect shape... the few times I've played in any private course was for various tournaments over the summer. We get Sunol as our home course (if you've ever played there), two 18-hole courses, but greens are hella gay. If you're a good putter you might like it there. The rest of us hate it. xD You played at Summit? Those greens are pretty terrible too. Was it a match against Milipitas high? We played them a few weeks ago over there. I don't think I'll ever play you guys seeing that it's my last year and that MV is nowhere on our schedule. :( Lol, yeah it's in Fremont, the most Asian area of Fremont in fact. I go to the san jose area often because my mom grocery shops at Mitsuwa a lot. Not really for golf though. Any good courses there?

yeahhh summit is tough. i like the greens there much more than my deep cliff greens though (i'd rather play at a difficult course frequently than an easy course that isn't even a full length course). YEAH it WAS a match against milpitas. my friend calls their no. 1 "Tiger Woods" lol. Milpitas's number one shot +2 at summit, and we played them at Santa Clara before and he shot -2 0_0 (9 holes). O: you're a senior? and idk about good courses in the SJ area, since it's tough for me to play year round :/ There's Shoreline Golf Links, which you would probably find easy (I do, and i suck). And I haven't played there, but I heard Coyote Creek is really nice. uh i remember Callipe Preserve is nice, but a far drive from where I live. and did your school beat milpitas? if you shoot +4 for 18, i'd imagine your team did pretty well xD. milpitas is a strong team. especially compared to my team :/ i shot A FUCKING 53 AT SANTA CLARA TODAY FFFFFFMEEEEEEEE. i have no idea what i did, i went in confident, thinking i ironed out the problems in my full swing. for 9 holes btw >___________<

Lol, Jason is legit. I've played with him a couple of times, actually knew him since playing in a tournament maybe 5-6 years ago? I think it was at Crystal Springs (which is in Burlingame) where we both did really bad, like mid-high 80's if I remember. xD Oh, Shoreline... I have a bad relationship with that course. Never ever play well there. Played there plenty enough times. :( Callipe was our alternate home course 2 years ago. That place is nice, but it's always packed in the weekends so there are divots and ball marks everywhere. But one of the better courses around my area. xD Yeah, we beat them. We have an amazing freshman this year, who's nationally ranked. I think he won an AJGA event (American Junior, so it's nationwide w/ no age groups) before he even entered high school. He's pretty amazing, averaging under par. And then this junior and I both break 40 pretty consistently for 9 holes, and the rest of our team shoots low-mid 40's so we're pretty good this year. Still lost to Irvington, but whatever, 5 strokes is pretty close. Santa Clara? Did you play... Wilcox or something? Shit happens. I shot a 43 there a few weeks ago after going 6 over in the first 3 holes. D:

really bad as in mid-high 80's? under bogey golf is a good, solid round for me xD i'd love to shoot mid-high 80's on a BAD day lol. lmao wilcox is jokes. MY SCHOOL CAN BEAT THEM. their players usually shoot 50 ish i believe, so they're not a strong team damn, your team is really good D: do you have a coach? (personal, not the coach from the school team. if you guys are like us, your "coach" is more of a baby sitter lol) if you ever get inconsistent contact (which i doubt you do) (esp w/ driver), are there any things you try to do to fix it? i know i should be playing year round to avoid this but i get busy and lazy :\ and it figures you guys never play us, you must be in some league far pro-er lmao  it sounds like your total team scores are usually ~200? (5 scores counted x 40 strokes) EDIT: oh, and how often do you play during the off season? i want to stay with golf better. and its masters week O: i havent followed the pga in so long

I dunno, I was one of those kids who practiced nearly every day and took lessons regularly. Golf was a big part of my life. I don't take it nearly as seriously now, my school golf coach calls it Senioritis for golf. Yeah, Wilcox isn't that great. Their #2 shot in the 50's if I remember. I had a coach. I kinda stopped taking lessons this year though, last time I saw my coach was ~3 months ago? A good private coach definitely helps, but it's more of a long term fix and it's fucking expensive. Hm... be more specific? Do you know what kind of bad shots you have? Nah... our league is not that good. 2 good-ish teams and the rest suck. We make NCS qualifiers every year and always fail to qualify. Yeah, about 200ish. Though yesterday, we apparently shot 233 because coach put our 6 bottom players, since it was against Kennedy. Kennedy has players who shoot in the 60's for 9 holes. I usually still practice almost every day on the off season. Though last off-season I played very little golf because I stayed at UC Davis the whole summer and I had to work on college apps when school started. Regular practice is really the only way to get good because golf requires so much precision. And yeah, I stopped following golf too. xD

Well, all my problem shots happen with the driver. They all stem from inconsistent contact, which gives me anything from topping the ball, snap hooks, pushes, slices, and the occasional straight drive :/ I guess the only real solution is to practice and play more frequently. Fortunately for me, our last two matches in the regular season are at my home course (deep cliff) where the driver is unnecessary. Longest par 4 in the front 9 is like 250 yds and i can just lay up my tee shot w/ like a 6 iron. can't hit drivers w/ the other par 4s; you'll either overshoot the green by like 40 yards or you wont be able to work around the dogleg and ouch, 60's is not good x3 well, good luck trying to stick w/ golf in college. i think strat used to play, but stopped in college since he had no way to pay the green fees :\ EDIT: i'm pretty steady around mid-30s for my par 30 home course now :] shot 35 today, which is a very solid round for me :P

Yeah, seeing that you don't have a consistent miss, it looks more like a practice issue. Hand-eye coordination goes away pretty quickly. Deep Cliff sounds like our home practice area's golf course. But we don't play there because our coach decided that the course won't help our games at all. xP Eh... I might stick to club golf or intramural golf. Non-Division I schools, I might be able to make varsity, but that's just too time-consuming. And yeah, golf is a very expensive sport, especially after you're over 18. While you are still considered a junior, there are some nice deals via NCGA and stuff like that that make golf affordable. 5 over is very good. :O You sound like an amazing putter. xD

did you guys see McIlroy's meltdown, ouch

@Zombo Yea, it was disappointing.
-
Date: Tue, Apr 12 2011 04:56:06
unfortunately, my putting has declined horribly over the last 26 hours IDK HOW AND I HAVE A MATCH TOMORROW DD: yeah...i havent followed golf until yesterday; one of my friends said mcilroy blotched an earlier tournament with a 5 stroke lead, so he wasn't surprised :/
-
Date: Wed, Apr 13 2011 23:04:30
League match tomorrow, haven't practiced all week because I was away from home. McIlroy shot.... 80?
-
Date: Wed, Apr 13 2011 23:12:56
good luck :O and yeah he did, it was tough to watch :\
-
Date: Fri, Apr 15 2011 02:35:36
So yeah, league match sucked. We lost and got 2nd. 393, which isn't even that bad. All our guys finished so we were sitting with a 5 shot lead, waiting for Irvington's last player. He needed to shoot better than an 84 for them to win. He is a backup player, who hasn't played a season match all year. He probably shoots in the 90's or worse. The other coach was already congratulating us, and he comes in with an 80. >.>
-
Date: Fri, Apr 15 2011 04:39:48
SHIT, 393 IS HELLA GOOD, thats averaging +6.6 per person DAMN. im pretty consistent at +6 for NINE holes on a SUPER EASY COURSE where'd you guys play? curious. and apparently you guys play 18 holes for all your matches? wow also: http://sports.yahoo.com/golf/blog/devil_ball_golf/post/Kevin-Na-comes-unglued-at-Texas-Open-cards-a-15?urn=golf-wp1068 OUCH x3 lol, i shot a 45 at my par 30 home course today. super rough start, +12 after 4 holes because i had this nasty push/shank. then i found my problem and shot 4 consecutive pars and botched number 9 with a tee shot into the water to end +15. bad score, but i'm happy with how i was able to make a comeback, both in terms of my golf and my piece of mind. as you could probably imagine, +12 after 4 digs you into a pretty deep psychological hole xD
-
Date: Fri, Apr 15 2011 05:02:12
No, we usually play 9, but for the league match, it's 2 rounds of 18 holes. And NCS is 18 holes. We'll need to go through NCS qualifiers... again... fuuuuuuuuuu Oh, and we played Sunol, Cypress course. They aerated the greens like yesterday. -.-" 393 is really good for us, considering two of our better players got suspended from the golf team for drawing penises in the bunkers, so we had to use some backup players. :/ Lolol, I just saw that article on facebook. xD He really should've taken it back to the tee box a third time. That was pretty bad. Yeah, the psychological aspect of golf has always been the toughest for me, not because I get mad but because I subconsciously start doing math in my head while I play. Take today for example. I started bad, going +3 in the first 4, then I eagled #6 which is a par 5, went even until #14, then went 4 over in the last four for a 77. I can't finish for my life. :(
-
Date: Fri, Apr 15 2011 23:10:14
um, just know that i usually am the number you're over par for half as many holes lol. its been annoying me, i do great in practice, but the first shot i hit on the range on match day is a shank lol and it stayed w/ me for 4 holes. at least it didnt stay w/ me for all 9  i wonder how i would have done if i didnt have that shank to begin the round with D: i shot consecutive pars on holes 5-8, and 5 (par 3) has a pretty tough green to hit to our team ended our regular season with a 6-6 record. its what we expected at the beginning of the season, seeing that we're a rather weak team in our league. 4th place in the league, so we get to take 3 guys to leagues. top 2 guys definitely gonna go. i need to practice to get myself in the third spot lol! EDIT: applying for NCGA youth on course is a FUCKING BITCH!
-
Date: Sat, Apr 16 2011 23:54:27
Hm... do you consistently start shanking it on days of matches? It might be nerves... The game of what-if's... every golfer does it. xP Leagues as in NCS or CCS qualifiers or what? Well, good luck! NCS qualifiers this year is at our home course. xD Do they still make you write an essay for applying to NCGA youth? It's worth it though... $1 rounds of golf? Yes please.
-
Date: Sat, Apr 16 2011 23:59:06
my gawd it was like 20 "short" answer questions, not an essay. gets so golf-unrelated too... they want to know about a conflict i had w/ my friends/parents and my career goals in life lol nah it wasn't nerves. i think i should have chipped before i went to the range so i coulda gotten used to contact before bringing it to a full swing. its all good now though :] my arms/wrist were getting stuck and i would leave my clubface like 45 degrees open xD i just focus on releasing my wrists now i dont even know how our leagues match or anything works lol...

now that its summer, im doing this golf camp at coyote creek run by my school's coach. its pretty cool, and its a nice course haha, never been there before since its so far from me =P @casual you playing this summer? and forgot, are you a senior now? are have you graduated? O:
-
Date: Tue, Jun 28 2011 05:14:20
Fancy. ;] Playing year-round is definitely good for your game. Actually, I haven't touched my clubs since the school season ended. I just graduated, and I'm 18 now, so I'm no longer eligible for junior tournaments and such... so I'm done with competitive golf. I should probably pick up my clubs again before I lose all my skills forever. -.-

used to play all the time, played on the highschool team for 1 year (moved to another school that didn't have a team after that) usually shoot mid 80s or upper 90s, but haven't swung a club in 2 years so i'd probably shoot like 105 if i played today haha
-
Date: Wed, Jun 29 2011 22:46:15
9 holes at coyote today. lol my full shots destroy me, especially anything longer than mid irons. my short game was pretty nice but it doesnt help if you cant even get to the green xD wasnt really keeping score but i think i was doing double bogey golf LOL. garbage full swing is frustrating, but i ended by sinking a 30 footer =D
