The book is about relationship problems obviously, not about america or its dreams Gatsby represents the trouble men have to get with chicks, not america.

I think there might be an analogy between the relationship between the nouveau riche Gatsby and the old aristocracy woman he is in love with, and the relationship between America and Europe at the time, with the newly rich American society which still though had pervading feelings of cultural inferiority to Europe. I'm not sure the analogy is as obvious today is it may have been back then.
