The 'S' in 'Sprite' stand for liquid. Sprite = (S)Liquid that's (P)ure and (T)asty. It's a recursive, partial acronym. Coca Cola wanted 'Liquid that's pure and tasty' as the first advertising slogan (and they did in the 60s when Spite was launched). They added the other letters because SPT sounds like an awful drink name. You can see the story of how Sprite's name came about on this page on their website: -
