Movie Maker 2.6 is the best, simple to use free one IMO.

If your only want simple editing, Moviemaker is very user friendly so you won't have any problems making a video. If you plan on more complicated editing definitely go with sony vegas

if you just want to make simple collab videos, ie. put together clips, maybe add a title, simple transitions (crossfade is the only one anyone actually uses anyway) then windows movie maker (or imovie if you have a mac) comes with the computer, and will do the job just fine just make sure you avoid white text on blue background, that gives it the "Windows movie maker" look i see no reason to go beyond that, vegas isn't that useful at a make-a-collab level, everything can be achieved in wmm once you get the hang of wmm, and you want to expand on editing skills, then move onto vegas, but i see no point starting at vegas you dont start learning how to drive on a ferrari, you learn in a user-friendly yaris

That's because just about every other transition in WMM looks straight up corny.

majority of vegas and other high end editing suites (fce4) have corny transitions as well primarily, any of the wipes theres some nice ones, but most of the time, you would ignore the majority of the transitions in any suite

Just don't do fades. How often do you see fades in a movie or in a TV show? Very very rarely.

fades usually happen at the end of scenes obviously you wont fade every clip, but thats because you want continuity fades and other transitions indicate an end to the scene in psing, each combo will be classified as a "scene" hence the use of fades is acceptable

There is no code for acceptable or not acceptable.
