So, Im planning to build a PC. Problem is, I have little to no knowledge on building a PC efficiently and productively. I mean, I can take it apart and know where it goes, I know not to fuck up chips and other stuff like that, but Im not sure what's what. I have a budget of around ~400$, give or take a couple. I was planning to go for this case/shell/whatever cause of its slim capabilities, and it looks nice. http://www.mwave.com/mwave/SKUSearch_v3.asp?px=FX&scriteria=BA31521 Any ideas on processor/ram? Had some ideas..bear with me:
-
[*]i5 processor OR AMD Athlon II X4.
[*]~2-4 gigs of ram would be sufficent
[*]A DECENT graphics card. No GTX480 OC Power shit-crap-thing GTS-R-X thing. Something that can support the newer games in okay-to-great graphics.

before i go on, i'd say that 400 bucks wont get u too far now for processors , i'd go with i5, i always have a better experience with intel processors than AMD. dunno what u consider newer games but i know that i can run MW2 high on 9800GT, for ur budget, i'd say go for a 4650 or maybe a 4670, it'll suffice u. ram prices are dropping quite a fair bit now, i'll go for 2x 2gb ddr3

lol, $400 is pretty tight but I'll see what I can come up with. Case and PSU: $60 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119118&cm_re=Cooler_Master_Elite_330-_-11-119-118-_-Product - Coolermaster make pretty good cases and PSUs, I recomend you not to skimp on your PSU as it could brig your whole computer down. If you don't like this you can stick with your InWIn one. Optical Drive: $18 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106289&Tpk=ihas124 Processor: $90 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103846&Tpk=phenom%20ii%20x2%20555 - Black Edition so overclocking will be really easy, and with the small chance of core unlocking this is pretty good. GPU: $65 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102892&cm_re=radeon_5550-_-14-102-892-_-Product RAM: $45 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148194&cm_re=crucial_ddr3-1333_2gb-_-20-148-194-_-Product - Cheap and Overclocks well. Mobo:$85 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131656&cm_re=Asus_M4A77T-_-13-131-656-_-Product - USB 3.0, and will unlock cores HDD: $75 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185&cm_re=samsung_spinpoint_f3-_-22-152-185-_-Product - Top notch, really fast, if you don't need that much space get the 500GB version. CPU Cooler: $30 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103065&Tpk=coolermaster%20212 - You should be able to acheave a reasonable OC with this. Total: $468 With a budget of $400 i5 isn't really possible. The cheapest cost about $200 dollars and that'd be half of your budget gone. $150 is pretty good for a 22" monitor. What brand is it? Edit: What the hell are all those -_-s about :P

It'll seriously make more fucking sense if you just built a decent computer or something top of the line instead of going with a low-line pc at 400. I mean shit you can build a nice pc but nothing thatll perform to up to date games, software, modern cpu speeds, etc. People crap out on pc parts and end up facing more problems later. I pretty operate all of my vocational centers pcs. Anything you need to know. Hit me up
-
Date: Tue, Sep 7 2010 18:19:21
Yeah, I'll suggest spending at least $600. It'll be cheaper in the long run as well.
-
Date: Tue, Sep 7 2010 18:46:33
With 400 dollars, you're going to get something that's going to have to be replaced very soon. At least spend 1000 dollars worth of parts, just to be a bit future proof.

@Mrgameandwatchavatardude Thanks, Ill consider looking into that :D Its..Acer, I think. Or Asus. Something with an A <_< Also, my friend also recommended that same processor :p Read from the reviews that OC could be possible, but Im not totally sure how to do it :\ @Mike/Dritan: Understood. Then again, this is coming out of my own pocket, and I cant afford anything past 500. I know its exteremely limited, but I have to have some spending money for my car that Im getting next week..so yeah. My friend and I built up on a list; tell me what you think
Ram: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820178222&cm_re=DDR2_PC2-6400_XLR8-_-20-178-222-_-Product Processor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103808&cm_re=amd_am3_phenom_II-_-19-103-808-_-Product HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136207&cm_re=750gb_hard_drive-_-22-136-207-_-Product Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128394 GFX Card: ATI Raedeon 150 (or something along those lines)
Case Im still think about. GFX card as well, I have one that might fit.

If you're getting an AMD Phenom II X4 955 I think you should get DDR3 RAM instead of DDR2 RAM. Also when choosing your DDR3 Ram I would advise you do not choose one solely based on the speed. You will have to look at CAS latency as well. Usuall lower CAS latency means that it will have faster timings. The Samsung F3 HDD that I suggested earlier in this thread really is the best all rounder and will be a bit faster than the Western Digital one you have thought about. Can't see any problem with the Mobo you picked though, Gigabyte make pretty good boards.

But if I get DDR3, wont it be more expensive
/ Id have to get a different mobo?Im considering your option of mobo cause of the USB 3.0.. couple of questions, though-
[*]Is there an onboard GFX card? The other one has an Radeon HD 4200 built in
[*]How will you know if its PCI-E or PCI- E2.0 (and such) ?Shouldve looked at the picture  [*]Does it use the same type of ram, since it has 240 pins? [*]Can USB 2.0 male plugs be used in USB 3.0 female plugs? (Or recievers, whatever. you get it) Or is it entirely different? -

Is there an onboard GFX card? The other one has an Radeon HD 4200 built in - Yes, If the chipset is ends in a G or GX eg 890G, 790GX, there is onboard graphics.
-
Date: Fri, Sep 10 2010 02:42:29
i'll still say DDR3 is worth it though, even if its slightly expensive.
-
Date: Fri, Sep 10 2010 17:12:11
I think so to, however it won't really make much of a difference in performance. It's just for future-proofing really.

okay so..personal bump of the thread. Got my processor :D :D Got it about 15 dollars more due to tax..but whatever. updated my list, again; but this one's final. case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811121093&cm_re=microatx_case-_-11-121-093-_-Product mobo http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128394 ram http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820178222&cm_re=DDR2_PC2-6400_XLR8-_-20-178-222-_-Product Also got some 120mm fans; one of which ill be mounting onto that giant airscoop-looking thing :D also, Raedeon 4200 HD graphics aint that bad right? Its intergrated into the mobo, and claims it can support 1080p. Read some pretty good reviews about it, but heard about some heatsink-area/mounting issues about it. Should I be worried?

????????????????/// pc's only cost $600? I thought it cost aronund $1000+....wow...so its not so expensive...but how about 22" LCD 8 gig ram 4 ghz cpu 2 tb :C 2 gb video card how much will that cost?
-
Date: Fri, Sep 24 2010 15:54:55
To be honest there is no need for something like that. But if you're just curoius: A good 22" LCD - $300 8GB RAM - $200 4ghz CPU = an intel i7 hex core overclocked - $1000 2TB HDD - $150 2 x 2GB GPU in corssfire - $1400 A good case - $250 A watercooling setup to cool it all - $500 Total: $3800
-
Date: Fri, Sep 24 2010 20:42:55
Speaking about watercooling, what's your opinion on coolin systems? Is it worth it to get an aftermarket heatsink/processor cooler? Whats your opinion on watercooling? Is it efficent?
-
Date: Sat, Sep 25 2010 03:45:30
watercooling will destroy your budget...
-
Date: Sat, Sep 25 2010 11:24:07
Watercooling is awesome, but only if you have a really large budget. You may as well get a better processor, than watercool. I would advise you to aircool though. It will improve overclocks quite a bit. Also, what prossesor did you get in the end?

Isn't that what you wanted lol. If you wanted the best rig possible it would be nitrogen cooled and have a few more graphics cards and RAM.

If it could play it at max settings on the triple monitor setup, then it would be perfect. That build was meant as a joke, as in the parts are to overboard for what a normal person would need. Also, when I say good for the monitor, I mean awesome, like a professional one. Unless you got your monitor second hand or cheaply, it would not even compare to a $300 one. -

22" is too small you need a 30" monitor to support 2560x1600

@jlsyber the second heatsink looks..absolutely beastly. Question is, will it fit in http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811121093&cm_re=microatx_case-_-11-121-093-_-Product ? I got all of the stuff yesterday, and that the size of the case is freakin puny as fuck. Ive been looking into aftermarket heatsinks/coolers cause I read tons about how the stock heatsinks/fans are noisy/ineffective
-
Date: Fri, Oct 1 2010 21:33:58
I really doubt it will fit in there. You'll have to look for a low profile heatsink. Pick from http://www.frostytech.com/top5_lowprofile_heatsinks.cfm. They also give you the sizes of all of them so you won't have to worry about them not fitting (if you measure the case properly :P)

those are for intel processors :\ also; i google'd this: http://www.overclock.net/air-cooling/647983-suggestions-low-profile-cooler-am3-matx.html http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=35-185-129&ReviewNo=1753375&SortField=0&Pagesize=10&IsFeedbackTab=true&rdm=3#scrollHelpful1 This guy has the exact processor, and one of the consumers of the fan has the same model (mine has 2 more ram slots, thats all) mobo as me. Problem is, the guy on the forum has an AM3 processor, whilst the heatsink only accepts up to AM2+. Wat?

I think AM2+ and AM3 use the same heatsinks. That heatsink is quite good. You should get that. -
