Given the opportunity, say that there is an oracle who can see your future but will only tell you two things; one, exactly when you are going to die, and two, exactly how you are going to die. Would you want to know either of these and why?

No because I would tempt fate and do stupid shit knowing I would not die, end up getting badly hurt and living out the rest of my life as a cripple waiting to die.

Is this an Oedipus reference????

Correct me if I am wrong but how is this a Oedipus reference? I would like to know both, so I can try to prevent death as much as possible. We fear the process of death not death itself. Death, is just a word.

If it was really foretold there would be nothing oyu could do to stop it and you would just waste a bunch of time and effort trying to prevent it making your life worse. -

if you know when you will die, does that mean you are fated to die at that determined moment... or could the new found knowledge of your death lead your life to end at some other point?

Reason;277269]if you know when you will die, does that mean you are fated to die at that determined moment... or could the new found knowledge of your death lead your life to end at some other point?
So are you trying to ask whether or not you can use the knowledge of your death to prevent it? If so, then consider the following. The future that you are told of, namely when you are going to die, in that future your future self already knows that he/she is going to die at that moment because he/she was told so in the past (which is the present for you). Meaning that in that future, your future self has the knowledge of when he's going to die and still dies. This would mean that you can't (or perhaps chose not to) prevent your death. However, it seems very plausible to to be able to prevent your death. Say for example, you are told that next week tuesday you are going to die in a car accident. In this case all you have to do is never leave your house on next week tuesday and you won't die. Unless it is like final destination where you are just prolonging the process of your imminent death. [QUOTE=JackyMacky wrote: Is this an Oedipus reference????

Say you find a way to take precautions to prevent your death at the foretold moment, now you dont know when youre going to die since youll die another way and time. so why even bother?

k... well basically i dont care if someone tells me when i will die because we dont know how this shit works. if we believe in fate (lack of free will or just a determined destiny) then we will certainly die at that determined moment. if we believe in the ability to change the outcome of our future (free will) then we can use this knowledge to prevent our death. we just dont know which it is. and to those who think "because i must die at this given point, i am incapable of dying at any other point", if this is true, what if you jump out of a building before your fated time? you may not die, but you will probably spend the rest of your life as a cripple... just a thought. -

Yes. I believe such a thing would be a gift. I do not believe in fate, so to speak. I believe we are the decisions we make. If I made a decision that effects my death, then naturally I would want to make a wiser one, since I have no wish to die.

I would not. It would be pointless, you'd be paranoid all the time trying to prevent your death. If the "oracle" told you how and when, what would be the point of trying to avoid it? If he/she said it and it is the legit truth, there would be no way of changing what's already been said by this person.

i guess you are going to die one day anyways. But imagine yourself living your days, knowing how you are going to die...

Knowing when you'll die would be better than knowing how you'll die. Who knows if your death can be a painful one and you're just left there struggling in the limbo..
