Regular Pen Discussion / Old Vs New SuperTip markers?
-
Date: Thu, Aug 26 2010 22:01:00
The supertip is a marker typically used for the body and sometimes the cap. There are 2 versions of the supertip. old(skinny) and new(fat). they also come in black bodies for color variations. Top one is the newer, fatter version bottom is the old and skinner version. The new one seems to have a smaller lip on the cap and seems more rigid in texture The new one has a bigger backcap which makes it possible to double cap it The new one (top) is fatter toward the front, making it more difficult to put caps on the left one(new) is clearly fatter Similarities: ======== White and black available "SuperTips by Crayola" on barrel Differences ======== New is DC-able New needs tape in the front for comssa caps Old is better for KT's/busters (IMO) New has harder and more brittle bodies/caps New has more raised and thick barrel text New is fatter New has thicker front New has bigger backcap/plug Comments? and did i leave anything out?

No credits to Guitrum for first pointing this out?
-
Date: Fri, Aug 27 2010 01:54:16
I've never used the old supertips... Does it really make that big of a difference?
-
Date: Fri, Aug 27 2010 01:56:21
Old supertips you could stick ct or kt or m&m caps on the backs of. They don't fit on the backs of the new ones. That's my biggest problem when I want to make dr. kt's with st bodies. Also I found that sometimes when you try to rub the text off with eraser or paper methods some of the gold text stays there which is really annoying sometimes cuz then you have to rub like crazy to get it out and get carpal tunnel
-
Date: Fri, Aug 27 2010 02:00:40
old supertips can fit comssa caps perfectly =]
-
Date: Fri, Aug 27 2010 02:02:33
All of my caps still fit on my old supertips o_O. I have never had a problem with it...
-
Date: Fri, Aug 27 2010 02:05:01
Yeah that makes sense. The Old ones are not as wide on the back so it's easier to put caps on them. New ones are harder because they are wider
-
Date: Fri, Aug 27 2010 02:36:55
I've realised one difference in my ST barrels as well though I've never bought the new ST's yet. The gold wording is slightly lower on one barrel but everything else is the same. Not sure if I have the different ones anymore but if I do I'll take some pictures of it and upload it
-
Date: Fri, Aug 27 2010 02:37:34
Oh wait... i meant to say new suptertips. My bad. my comssa cap fits on and stuff o_O and my KT caps do too. they arent on all the way but they are
-

You can a make Fake Baaron Dc with the New Supertips
-
Date: Fri, Aug 27 2010 04:04:00
are the old ST's discontinued?

Hippo2626 wrote: are the old ST's discontinued?
think so, that's why there are new supertips -
Date: Fri, Aug 27 2010 10:28:01
if the new ST is fatter...then you wouldn't need tape for comssa caps.
-

cardswithpens wrote: if the new ST is fatter...then you wouldn't need tape for comssa caps.
yea , they are fatter , and they are too fat that comssa caps can't fit on , u hav to add extra tape on the barrel to make the caps stay on it -
Date: Fri, Aug 27 2010 11:18:07
I think most people whove used or had access to supertips has seen this, but this really shows the difference, Also, there are other markers by crayola which are rebranded supertips.
-
Date: Fri, Aug 27 2010 15:04:46
other markers rebranded? if you're talking about that strange looking supertip that guitrum used in his superbic mod...
-
Date: Fri, Aug 27 2010 19:49:48
Well this probably goes without saying, but i think you need to add tape to comssa backplugs to make them fit in new ST's because theyre fatter. They might need tape for old ones too. not sure.
-
Date: Fri, Aug 27 2010 20:36:00
@CrackerJack no the old supertips you can just put comssa caps on without the backplug or anything perfectly fine, and also emboss caps can fit on the back on the supertip unlike the new ones :D
-
Date: Fri, Aug 27 2010 23:57:45
REALLY?? thats so cool, but i have never had an emboss/ajisai so i wouldnt know.. :(

Oh, hahah I havent seen that mod yet, maybe. But I meant things like the Sketching line of markers by crayloa, (there are others as well) they are essentially supertips rebranded. (exactly except for maybe minor diffrences) for instance the sketching line is exactly the same except the tip holster diameter is slightly smaller than the supertip, all other dimensions are the same. =\ -
Date: Tue, Aug 31 2010 19:47:10
The old ones taper a lot more
-
Date: Sat, Sep 4 2010 20:36:44
Oh, this clears up a lot of things haha. I was wondering why half of my ST's were slightly different. thanks.
-
Date: Fri, Dec 31 2010 01:18:10
Personally I like the old ones better because of how thin it is, maybe because i have smaller hands, but the newer ones don't feel good to me because they have very fat bodies.
-
Date: Fri, Dec 31 2010 13:01:08
Theres a new type of ST!!! http://img202.imageshack.us/i/photo1ws.jpg/ Caps are different! Different type of Back Cap... http://img340.imageshack.us/i/photo4dw.jpg/ The new ones suck! (note to self never buy 20 pack)
-

i like the new ones better... if you want to add a gel pen inktube, it holds better. you still need to add teflon or it will rattle though...

Found some of those sketching markers. -

Sketching IQ, these have a black base body, I have a few normal sketchings holed up some where as well, pretty sure these went out of production a while ago, but as you can see crayola has a tendency or rebranding, and the markers are usually very similar...
-
Date: Thu, Jan 20 2011 02:43:33
Actually I think these may have come about earlier than supertips, I found these from around 8-10 years ago =P
-
Date: Sun, Feb 6 2011 01:46:44
I prefer the fatness of the new Super Tips. Also when I saw the 5th picture I though it was two eyeballs looking at me.
-
Date: Wed, Mar 2 2011 09:50:17
Recenlty I received new super tips other than this two. I think that those are discontinued, don't have more info, can't get old ones, only those: Doesn't fit :( Thinner (like super pirat) and shorter (15,5cm).
-
Date: Wed, Mar 2 2011 09:53:02
WOAHHHHH O_O
-
Date: Wed, Mar 2 2011 14:59:39
thinerr..i like...but shorter..no.
-
Date: Wed, Mar 2 2011 18:16:15
it's export version only that's ghetto. US is still same epic length atleast for now
-
Date: Wed, Mar 2 2011 19:38:51
in France, "old" supertip dont exist now :/ Now, its the "new" supertip, ==', so we cant do bustercyl
-
Date: Wed, Mar 2 2011 21:10:04
Oh, we can only make real buster with old ST ?
-
Date: Wed, Mar 2 2011 21:19:53
new st is wayyyy to short
-
Date: Wed, Mar 2 2011 21:36:04
I've always made Buster CYL with new O.O.
-
Date: Wed, Mar 2 2011 23:48:36
I suggest new names. Oldest supertip is the one that tapers like hell, how about supertip 1. The newer supertip (the one that most people use) which is similar to the oldest one but thicker and doesn't taper, supertip 2. The one with the ridiculous wave pattern on the cap, supertip 3. This REALLY WEIRD supertip, supertip 4. Opinion? =P
-
Date: Thu, Mar 3 2011 00:32:15
I have both and I think they're both equally great.

theres another st that has square caps but its regular length -

the old st arent tapered.. what makes u think that? -
Date: Thu, Mar 3 2011 01:09:16
The fact that emboss caps fit neatly on one end while comssa caps fit neatly on the other. That's a pretty big taper.
-

I really dislike old supertips,it really hard to pluck out the backplug,n it is thin enough=/
-
Date: Sun, Apr 17 2011 16:56:12
the new supertips are a lot harder to get out..
-
Date: Sat, Jul 2 2011 19:32:24
The new Supertips are a lot better for me, then they are smaller and they are as big as a superpirat-body.

I like anew one, because its bigger
-
Date: Sat, Aug 13 2011 00:49:02
the old supertips are less smooth, in my opinion, and the backplug took forever to remove. the caps cant me made into stek bodies, but the newer ones can. the newer ones are smoother and sturdier, and you can fit a signo tip in the back after the plug has been removed. i cant seem to find the newer ones anymore... the old ones are back in stock in SoCal
-
Date: Tue, Dec 27 2011 00:46:54
I prefer the old supertips coz the caps have a nice smooth feeling but the new ones the caps are dry and ugly.
-
Date: Wed, Dec 28 2011 18:01:47
the tip thr...cant make ivan mod(2nd gen)i sure u forgot this
-
Date: Sun, Feb 12 2012 04:40:06
I have supertips that are so old that they don't have writing on them...but I prefer the new ones, easier to cut. I was cutting an old supertip when the barrel cracked straight down the middle...it sucked

How do you all get them out? It takes me forever... and only works 1/3 times, otherwise i just have to cut it out... lol. -
Date: Sun, Jul 8 2012 21:56:09
Just look for a (huge) screw that fits into the backplug. then screw and pull as hard as you can (use a towel or something). It takes me like 10 secs to do and works everytime with old and new supertips :)
-
Date: Mon, Jul 9 2012 00:39:34
I like the new supertips because the backplugs are thicker and easier to pull out in my opinion. I hate them cuz i find it harder to fit commsas in them
-
Date: Mon, Jul 9 2012 22:38:14
WOW dude they didnt extend it THAT much what kind of question is that?

I like the old supertips better coz the comssa caps fit and buster is too long with the new ones
-
Date: Sat, Aug 11 2012 15:03:26
getting the backplug off the old supertip can be every annoying, prefably i like the new ones cause i can remove the backplug and also its easier to cut
-
Date: Sat, Aug 11 2012 18:08:46
needle nose pliers makes it okay. old st has more uses and is preferred
-
Date: Sun, Aug 12 2012 05:13:06
old STs coz more pens to make with it :D
-
Date: Sun, Aug 12 2012 11:21:00
i prefer the new one cos i never use old supertip b4 lol... but based on wad u guise said i guess that the old one is better than the newer version but the new supertip marker is good enuf for me :)
-
Date: Tue, Aug 14 2012 03:43:35
I prefer the old ones, since it's more comfortable for me when I spin.
-
Date: Tue, Aug 14 2012 10:26:17
the new ones don't even fit in the buster,well...it does as in it sucks putting the new one on.its kind of larger at one of the ends.
-
Date: Fri, Dec 14 2012 05:15:51
Old, i like thinner bodies
-
Date: Sat, Dec 22 2012 14:11:51
I would have to agree that with the old supertips, it is very annoying to move the backplug, I used needle nose pliers and it took like ten minutes. But I do agree that the old supertips feel better when spinning.

How do you remove it ? It is quite small for me to pull . -
Date: Sat, Dec 22 2012 19:15:55
@AdiblueseaQQQ just use needle nose pliers and pinch having one side of the pliers on the inside of the indent and the other side on the outside, then twist and pull. To get more grip just wrap a rubber band around the body. Next time just post this question in General Modifications.

trololol. I just quoted myself out of this thread. Read before you ask something. Almost everything is already answered. I just was a little bit pissed, because a lot of people are like you here, no time to read trough 5 pages just ask.... So i said "my post here is wasted" , because nobody is going to read it anyways.

sorry for reviving an old thread, but today I bought a pack of crayola supertips and they looked completely different from normal. here are a few pics: Any help would be appreciated.
-
Date: Wed, Aug 6 2014 22:05:25
@JAIvY i bought some 2 days ago, they were different from the last set i bought but still seemed similar besides a new back plug which is easier to get out, and the text is made deeper in and the paint doesnt come off through rubbing anymore, even with nailpolish remover it took 10 minutes and first the gold came off then there was a layer of silver... Definitely not the same as what you got though

Unfortunately the pack you bought are considered pretty much useless. Maybe yoy could make a VGG mod but supertips in the UK tend to be of that version and it's garbage -

@Ceru Seiyu thanks, I guess the UK is nearly completely void of pens then :(

Mostly yeah. We have pens to make the grip aviaire and signos are useful for mods but mostly we suck -

Probably, since im from the US -

The old ones were definitely better. They had the old ones in the UK too. I wonder why they would use the old ones as a picture on the packaging, but give u the new ones. i really don't know what happened @JAIvY but be on the look out for the old ones.

@AfroSquared was gonna try and make the vgg mod since i have a couple, don't have the time at the minute though so i won't be able to even start until next week. I'll try eventually and report back :) and yeah it seems so stupid they had the old picture on the pack but a new design, seems like us brits can't catch a break lol

I could post the length, width, thickness, and mass of the Old Supertips .vs. the New Supertips if you like? Something that I always thought was interesting is how they seem to have a different coating. The old supertips have a kind of matte finish, while the new ones have a glossy finish. Btw, I was in a dollar store and found some other brand of supertips that are EXACTLY the same size as the old crayola supertips, except they're a lot whiter AND have a glossy coating.

you can make ivan mod with ANY super tip but process will be slightly different/easier/more difficult
