Regular Pen Discussion / Starting Pen?
-
Date: Tue, Aug 24 2010 23:39:00
Hey spinners! I didn't even know this was a thing until it was suggested to me at a speedcubing forum. I have never spun my pen before, although I have tried countless hours in class to do so. I was wondering what sort of pen I should start spinning with? The first day I watched Eso's videos, I used a regular pen and that was no help at all. I assume you would need something long, since he used a long pencil, so I now have a pencil and I put felt tip pen caps on each side, is it good enough to start with? Another thing is that the pencil is not round, it has sharp edges, would you suggest I get a round one? I'm sure I can find one somewhere at home (I use mechanical pencils) thanks

I started with. a regular pen. But yeah mods help. and theres already a thread on this in the Pen Mods area so look through there first

But does it matter if it is circular or hexagonal shape? (the cross sectional shape)
-
Date: Wed, Aug 25 2010 00:01:52
Not really. If you don't like the pencil shape just pick up a pen

So, you got an account on the Universal PEN SPINNING Forum, but youve never spun a pen.....?

Most people, including myself prefer to spin round pens and pencils, but if it's working for you, just go for it.

Try www.penwish.com they have a bunch of mods for you to try. buy one that looks good or just like other people said, pick up a pen (circular is better in my opinion) and keep trying. EDIT: Cracker Jack don't be an asshole. He's new and simply had a question. Don't flame him please.

Started out with a regular pencil, but once ou get more into it and go on the forums, I would suggest a waterfall mod. They're a medium weight.

Quite expensive though. So you might want to meet up with other spinners near you and try out their mods to see what kind of weight, body feel, momentum you prefer

Wish I had a round one, I couldn't find one at home, they're not very common here. :( I went to the store to get one and ended up coming back with speakers for my ipod but I forgot about the pencil :eeek: hehe

A normal pencil, is prefered, round one perferably, and unsharpened, so you get added length. all four fundamentals can be learnt fairly easy on pencils, then you can hang around here during that time to learn about what pens you might want and make your own judgements. If you get stuck on a trick just move onto another one you think looks cool

since you posted this in the regular pen section, all recommendations should be regular pens and pencils or they will be considered off-topic. for mod recommendation, look here: http://forum.upsb.info/showthread.php?t=1377

Good luck spinning! :) I started with a regular pen too, now i have my own mod.
-

Just use a reg. pencil! It doesn't matter what pen you have, its not going to make you magically be able to do the trick. If you realllllllllly want one, i recommend a metal cossma or a RSVP MX with G2/Profile grip sub, or no subs if you can get the HGG...

use a normal pen, a PSG for example but, if you want to use a penmod, use a comssa =D

Starting with a pen is really a nice experience for me, I think that pens can be turned using standard woodturning tools, with the size and type of tool used varying with personal choice.

Just try a backcapped pen or a double capped pen, usually they work pretty well.

Use an unsharpened pencil, maybe with two erasetips, not neccesary, I find an unsharpened pencil is better than half of the mods i own.

imo, pencil is a bit to light, try using a pen or pencil with one pen cap for both side, that will help you alot more

Firstly try unsharpened pencil and see the weight, if its too light gradually move up to a different pen/pencil that is slightly heavier, eg. adding two rubbers to the end. Or making a bictory with extra grips ?

yep i agree with an unsharpened pencil. I used an unsharpened pencil while trying to learn the fundamentals.

bictory and signo tipped rsvp mx with a g2 grip for mods. pens, use an rsvp with the cap on the back or a double-capped rsvp. I think that you should just go with an unsharpened pencil with both sides with the back-cap thing (lol cant think of the name) and with both sides also having one of those eraser-back things that you can buy that are shaped like------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- / /|--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------|_|

-

it rlly depends on personal preference; i started with a BICtory. to me that was good starter.
-
Date: Wed, Sep 7 2011 19:03:25
I started off with a unshapend pencil and slowley worked my way up to my Waterfall Comssa
-
Date: Fri, Sep 16 2011 08:21:07
i started of with a papermate profile
-
Date: Fri, Sep 16 2011 11:50:16
You can never go wrong starting with an MX or a BICtory.
-
Date: Fri, Sep 16 2011 15:12:16
I don't know about anyone else but an mx isn't exactly balanced right? Might have just been mine. I started with an RSVP nx mmt. I prefer to spin with double sided mods because you can pretty much guarantee it's balanced.

Started with reg pen, with 2 caps. i will suggest BICtory since its easy to make/cheap and light, so when yu get better yu can move on to busters and heavier pens
-
Date: Sun, Sep 25 2011 18:00:41
Start with either a bictory or a colored pencil
-
Date: Mon, Sep 26 2011 11:53:05
A BicTory or a Double-Sided Pencil like this. That's the pencil mod I used before... Now I'm using the BicTory.

I don't think it really matters what you start out with, as long as you can spin it. Hell, I learn how to do the Thumbaround using a screwdriver, lol
-
Date: Tue, Dec 6 2011 18:03:20
you can spin with any pencil - only your skills with it is important
-
Date: Wed, Dec 7 2011 23:35:16

Lol, this thread is like super old but continues to get replies, so if nothing else, I would very much suggest a BICtory. It's incredibly cheap, you can make one practically on the go if you keep extra pens with you, and it's a really fantastic pen for people who haven't spun before. My thoughts anyways. :)

Date: Mon, Jan 16 2012 14:51:16
Zhigao(China penz gear)??maybe its ok...i started with that stupid pen..
-
Date: Tue, Jan 17 2012 10:33:11
BICtory is the best choice, if not try out a STAEDLER Wopex Pencil, its a heavier type of pencil, use to practice fundamentals x)
-
Date: Tue, Jan 17 2012 13:44:23
Metal Comssa. Never ever get a Zhigao. You'd be supporting cheapshit Chinese piracy and it's a lousy stick anyway.
-
Date: Tue, Jan 17 2012 13:50:37
Started with a BICtory, then a V7 capped jumbo pencil lol
-
Date: Mon, Jan 23 2012 20:41:56
GA, then rsvp mx
-
Date: Mon, Jan 23 2012 21:43:07
i made a mod that uses rounded pencil. you'll need: 2 anyball grip 1 rounded pencil 2 signo tip it's cheap and i personally think it is a good mod if you find any of the things above, i'll recomend it :devildance::banana::pickle::lock:
