Member Introductions / Old Dude takes up Pen Spinning - my introduction

Greetings to all pen spinners! I'm a new member to this forum (and pen spinning) and thought that I would introduce myself. At 54 years old, I'm probably one of your oldest members!!! How did I arrive here? Well, it's a long story (obviously)...I started juggling when I was a teenager but never really practiced seriously...I just learned enough to be able to do the 3-ball cascade (poorly). Years go by...then when I turned 40 I had a "mid-life crises" and instead of buying a hot sports car and cheating on my wife like some guys do, I decided to learn how to unicycle! It was one of the best things I've ever done - unicycling is an absolute blast and is a great way to stay in shape. I ride just about every day. But about 6 months ago I started thinking about doing more to keep my upper body in shape and so juggling came to mind as a fun way to keep toned. So I started juggling again - at least 1/2 hr every day - am I'm starting to get pretty good now. So anyway, I love Reddit, and I subscribed to r/juggling, and one day I noticed there was a sub-Reddit for "pen spinning". That sounded interesting, so I checked it out - WOW COOL - and here I am! I've been spinning for two weeks now and so far I can do the TA with an 80% success rate, the Charge for a couple revs (I'm much better with a drumstick), and today I did the Sonic for the first time!!! I made myself a "Bictory" and have started to make an RSVP MX but I have to figure out a substitution for the HGG. I'm not sure how far I will go into spinning, but its really fun and it's nice that's something I can play around with wherever I am. It's pretty addictive! I'm really glad that I found this forum - it is so helpful and inspirational. Hopefully you don't mind having an "old dude" around! In my head, I'm still only 15 ;) I guess that's all you need to know about me - there's a little more info in my profile - I am also a kinetic artist and there is a link to my website there. Nice to meet you!

I remember seeing some videos on youtube with someone about your age learning it, he learned the thumbaround and the thumbaround 1.5 But hey, welcome! If you have a webcam you could always pop into tinychat sometime and I'm sure people can help you with any tricks. You should learn the twisted sonic if you can do the charge, very useful trick for starting your first combos.

Thanks! I've never been tested on uni levels, but I think I'm at a level 4 right now....I can free-mount in several different ways, ride backwards, idle, idle one foot, hop over a curb, ride one foot, ride seat in front, hop seat in front, etc etc. The next big skill I need to learn is wheel walking. But this year I have mostly been doing mountain unicycling. Super fun! I have a 20", 24", 26", and 29" unicycle. Kind of like collecting pens, you always want one more, but a lot more expensive!!!! -

Hey, there and welcome. You sound like a cool dude. (: If you like unicycling that much, you should maybe try unicycle hockey. I did that for one semester, it's a lot of fun.^^

Sounds exactly like the old guy around Perth. Juggles a lot, also rides his unicycle just about every day. At heart, he might as well be as young as I am

I think some people have a natural talent for juggling - I don't! I'm making progress but it is S L O W. After about 6 months of steady practice I have a solid 3-ball cascade, a fair to decent Reverse Cascade, a fair "tennis" style cascade, and I can do the Half Shower left and right, an occasional underarm left and right, can do 20 two-ball column throws left and right, and about 6 throw "claw" style cascade. My goal is to have all of these pretty solid by summer and be starting on learning Mills Mess. I might also try clubs. -

@unigami * For the grips yes, but the tip is a different issue. You can try a uniball signo which can be found in staples and walmart like stores but are harder to find, but it's still possible. It's heavier than hgg though and combined with the retractable rsvp grips, it may reduce the off balance of an original RSVP MX. Experiment with things! Look around, there are some good mods that can be purely made with USA mod parts. -
