http://www.google.com/trends/?q=pen+spinning I'm looking at the fixed scaling of the pen spinning google trend. Back in 2006-2008, the Search Volume Index would consistently be greater than 0.5. Nowadays, it'd be lucky to break 0.4... Anyone have an idea why? How can we increase exposure to pen spinning?

I guess it really cause it doesn't get as much media exposure like last time? At the same time, many people may watch pen spinning but don't end up doing it cause it takes plenty of practice and most people just don't want to do that :/ of course if you want to boost it, get youtubers to talk about it, if they talk about it, it'll have a rather big impact :)

Well this stat is only about google search right? maybe there was a lot more ppl starting in the days so they used google search more often. Now the info is more easy to access without usng google search

Hmm.. what @Zombo said is true, newbies may get their information from their friends in school nowadays cause that's where most of the pen spinning action is at right? :)

I guess that's the problem, how can we attract more adults to pen spinning? I would think it'll be hard. How would people be accessing info to pen spinning without google search? When I first started, my first instinct was to go on google and actually google 'pen spinning tutorials' or whatever. The pen spinning community is so small, imo, that there is no way you can learn how to pen spin without googling it. I mean, the chances of them typing in upsb.info in their search bar is probably 0. 'pen spinning' and 'penspinning' only averages 17k exact searches a month. I guess manipulative arts in general aren't that popular.

lol i ve never searched pen spinning on google before if someone wants to know about a manipulative art, they would want to see it,not reading a big chunk of text about them,so youtube would definitely be a better place to search :P

Normal adults have lives. They don't have time to just sit around spinning a pen. If you want to get more people into pen spinning, try looking toward starting young.

Usually, I think adults wouldn't spin, so let's just talk about the younger generation. I was thinking how pen spinning should have its own anime or manga XD I mean like think about it, when a new big anime is popular, people start buying their cards and merch. So Should UPSB get a group if people to draw original mangas? :O

Getting back to google I think Zombo may have a point, although the downward trend could also indicate a combined disinterest in pen spinning, could be due to the state of economies, or as zombo said, the fact that there are so many resources, now a days I don't have to google pen spinning tutorials in order to find new tricks, through community's and youtube the information is plentiful. I find it interesting that english is second to last and america isn't even ranked in the top lists. :p. Also, look at the correlation with news reference volume, there hasn't been any "big" pen spinning exposure for a few years. Take a look at the data from other pen spinning key words such as penspinning http://www.google.com/trends/?q=penspinning&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all&sort=0 or pen tricks http://www.google.com/trends/?q=pen+tricks&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all or spinning pen http://www.google.com/trends/?q=spinning+pen&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all They all reflect the same trend. If you look at data from the USA, this past year or so there hasn't even been enough to graph. http://www.google.com/trends/?q=pen+spinning&ctab=0&geo=us&geor=all&date=all It probably means the novelty of pen spinning has worn off or is starting to wear off on the general public as far as finding out about what it is. Whether it's due to lack of spinners or just general awareness or disinterest, I'm not sure, but if you look at youtube hits on epn spinning related videos I think an upward trend would be found. Maybe people are moving away from the "Look it up" mindset to teaching or referring to a youtube user or upsb. All of these would contribute to the stats. On the other hand the trend may have been artificially inflated at the onset of 2007 due to the few news reports and is finally leveling out. Let's compare the result to the search for other manipulations contact juggling shows a similar trend http://www.google.com/trends/?q=contact+juggling&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all&sort=0 Juggling has much more data and shares the trend http://www.google.com/trends/?q=juggling&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all A search for yo-yo shows a less dramatic but similar trend http://www.google.com/trends/?q=yo-yo&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all and rubiks cube as well http://www.google.com/trends/?q=rubiks+cube&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all&sort=0 It seems to imply that the public interest in object manipulations seemed to peak around 2006-2009 and has declined since then. Reasons could be based in the economy, or technology, how google analyzes data, or just that people world-wide have less free time. Also, could be something like what is described here Although the trends look a bit different which would imply a different social or cultural factor is at play.
