IDX Mod (Impact DX) by Guitrum
I haven't really been modding recently due to the fact that college and work has hit me hard. Over a year ago I made this mod and was incredibly satisfied with the weight and feel of this mod and it has been my main mod since. It isn't especially difficult to make, in fact it is quite a simple and elegant design. I encourage anyone to try to make this and I dare them to tell me that it does not spin well.
[Stats]:
21.5 cm
17 grams
No ink (meant to spin)
COG=COP
Double Capped
[Materials]:
2x Donga Comssa caps
2x Pilot Dr. Grip grip sections
2x Uni-Ball Impact RT grips
2x Pentel Hybrid Gel Grip tips
2x Pentel Hybrid Gel Grip DX tips
2x Crayola Supertip bodies
1x Pelican Pirat/Tintenloscher/any suitable sub body
2x Extra grip sections (I used modrod grips)
[Tutorial]:
1) Gather your materials
2) Disassemble the Crayola Supertips. Discard everything except the bodies.
3) Cut/file the two Supertip tips so that there is 4mm of the body left, leaving the 14mm of the entire tip left.
4) A. Inside the Supertip tips you will see a ring of plastic. This needs to be removed to make room for the tip that will go inside it later. B. Grasp the ring of plastic with some needlenose pliers. C. With a twisting motion, break out all the plastic.
5) Screw the Pentell HGG tips onto the Donga Comssa caps to make metallic Comssa caps.
6) A. If you place the Supertip tips over the Pentel HGG tips on the metallic Comssa caps, you will see that their diameters do not match. B. File down the Supertip tips so that the diameter matches that of the Comssa cap. (see diagram for reference)
7) A. Wrap a bit of teflon tape around the Pentel HGG tip. B. Push the Supertip tip onto the teflon wrapped HGG tip. B. The tips will not stay on perfectly. The teflon tape allows for the shock of the mod being dropped to be lessened, making it less likely for the HGG tip to break. No need to worry if it falls off after pushed on.
8) A. Wrap a slight bit of teflon tape around the tip of the Supertip tip (lol). B. Screw on the HGG DX tip firmly. C. Complete this for both caps.
9) Use teflon tape to fill in the space left on the Supertip tip making the lenth of the cap one uniform diameter.
10) Wrap a small strip of cellophane tape around the Supertip tip and the Comssa cap. Make sure this is as tight as possible.
11) Break the Impact RT grips free of the plastic.
12) Using my inktube method, slip the Impact RT grips over the caps until they meet the ridge of the HGG DX tip.
13) Cut your grips to the desired lengths (I cut my Dr. Grip grips to 20mm-21mm long, as well as 2 rings worth of modrod grips). Then apply the grips to the caps as shown.
14) Rub the Pirat body clean (I use Nevr-Dull, stuff works like magic) as well as gut the body, remove the ink and sand away an bumps/burs.
15) Push the caps onto either side and you are done! Congratulations, you have now made an IDX Mod. -

So many materials ,and tape... Longer and hearvier than most comssa(cap) mod , more momentum and more expensive.

To get a different colour scheme would metallics gels grips work in place of the impact rt grips?

as for a tip sub, i'm not sure what would work because the weight is very specific and any sub would probably cause a problem with how the pen spins. As for a grip sub, I'm sure you could use anything that has a similar length. You could probably sub it with an hgg grip, but at what point do you call it a Pirat KS knock off?

@Demon to get another color scheme you can use colored comssa caps and do a gripcut on the impact rt grips or maybe you can use spoko grips or this grips http://penwish.com/product_info.php?cPath=129&products_id=1044

Why does it have to be hgg DX tip on tip of tip of supertip tip? Won't regular hgg tips fit?

I know it sounded ridiculously but question is serious, cause I'd like to purchase required stuff, but I don't know how to get that hgg DX and I'm wondering, whether I could replace it with regular hgg or signo. -

regular hgg tips cant, signos might be able to but the required amount of sanding and tape will be different also the mod will be heavier as well. -

colortwin, it makes the mod a bit shorter, but its a black body. i have yet to find a good pirat sub for a black body.
