Whatever you do don't buy a Sector Nine. There are much better longboards out there. Take a look around here http://www.longboardskater.com/ and @Chobi should be able to help if I'm not mistaken.

lol thanks @tylt for the mention. And S9 isn't THAT bad, i quite liked the S9 Race, but that is literally the only "great" deck of theirs, and it's not even for commercial sale. :/ What's your budget? I could help loads if you give me info on what you want. (topmount,drop/dropthrough, a speedboard or just casual shit etc etc etc) EDIT: the decks i use myself: For races, Rayne Killswitch (ltd edition carbon fiber) For the usual casual stuff, Landyachtz Drop Speed (ltd edition CF also, but somewhat comparable to the LY Drop Carve, Drop Carve is GREAT for beginners, not recommended for speedboarding) I'm somewhat biased on both Landyachtz and Rayne since i was sponsored by the former, and am working on a new sponorship with the latter.

casual shit @Chobi Basic DOwnhill.

Pretty good budget. You can get a good second hand set off http://www.silverfishlongboarding.com/forum/ if you're good at finding great deals (which I'm not lol) Basic downhill with some casual shit, I recommend: I own all of these myself, with the exception of the FSM which my cousin and I share. Rayne Vendetta Comet FSM Landyachtz Time Machine They're all very different though. So do a bit of research before you choose. Note that the pricing's just for the deck itself, it's that pricey because of the engineering and materials involved, no shit. In longboarding, you get what you pay for. I learned this the hard way lol If you need help with a complete set after you've chosen a deck, shoot me a PM :D
-
Date: Wed, Apr 18 2012 05:12:57
Can you explain to me very quickly these numbers on the wheels? 75x... 78....84? I like this Vendetta and Time Machine... Since I am a competly noob and I won't buy another one in years.. which one is good for a 0 to Pr0 level? I mean.. one for a life? @Chobi
-
Date: Wed, Apr 18 2012 06:44:24
Do you mean 75a, 80a, etc? That's basically the hardness and softness of the wheel. I'd say 80a is the "average." There are pros and cons as to how hard/soft your wheels to be, and I don't wanna go in depth with this stuff lol. Do some research, and PM me if there are stuff you can't understand. If you're looking for a good set of wheels, http://www.orangatangwheels.com/ is a great, but kinda pricey brand. I myself use 86a Orangatang 4Presidents cause I like it hard. ;) Since I'm a bit more biased to Rayne at the moment, I'd say the Vendetta. Both boards are pretty different from each other, the Time Machine is lower, and carves(/turns) better due to the angled ends, but will be more unstable compared to the Vendetta. Again, I'd rather not make an in depth comparison between decks, so research the difference between Drop, Dropthrough, and Topmount decks. I'm sure you can find all of that in Silverfish. But you can't really do serious downhill with either board, but they're both very good boards for freeriding. Neither should be used for serious racing like 65kph+ Freeriding by the way is, in simple terms, making the hill your bitch. Here's an amazing video by Kyle Chin showing what freeriding's all about, having a great ass time skating.

Jesus I didn't realise my post was THAT long lol. I really enjoy talking about longboarding, moreso on teaching someone who's interested in the sport so bear with me. :p
-

SO let me see if I got this. A high "a" number turns easily because of the "depth" like F1 Car that have big wheels for stability when turning. And small isn't that easy to control the longboard while turning in high speed. But it's easy to turn in low speed. I'm probably geting a 75+-85-a Orangtang that you are telling me. And vendetta, I liked the "carve" of it. Doesn't look like a BOWL but I think it's enough since I'm not going 65km/h SOOOO early. hmm.. Orangtang have soooo high "a's"... :S Do you know a good one that is 78...76a? What is bearing? I don't get it o.o And about the truck.. If the truck has a high angle.. does that mean that it can cover a better curve without sliding? edit.. wtf 300 dollars O.o

board are long.
-
Date: Thu, Apr 19 2012 02:54:46
Ok/. I wnet to a store that seels sector 9. 74mm 78a Wheels... is it good for Sidewalk/speed running? I am pretty sure that I won't go over 50km/h so early. So a Small "a" is good right? @Chobi I also checked this one. http://store.sector9.com/Product.aspx?ID=BBS125C&upc=00000000888961646099 It was 187 at the store btw. But the deck even being the "original complete" looked different. o.o
-

As much as possible, DO NOT get S9 stuff. It's cheap cause the quality's low as hell, my friend's Sunset delam'd (de-laminated) in a month. So much for that. The only good deck S9 has ever had is the Sector 9 Race, which isn't even out commercially. Yup 78a hould be fine. But I'm sure you'll be somewhat getting into sliding soon after, so swap to harder wheels to slide easier. :D And don't get Sector 9. Low quality, retarded wood used, bad feel and concave, that shit's just not worth the money, no matter how cheap it is. My Vendetta got run over by a car before, (upside down) and it's still alive today! Rayne's wood engineering is unparalleled. :P

Nope, a higher duro ("a") makes the wheel roll faster in most roads, but has much less grip since it's harder, therefore will slide easier and would be harder to control in steeper hills/harder turns. In non-race situations, harder (higher) duros make wheels easier to slide with, so get harder wheels when you're learning. With experience, you could slide with almost any wheel lol. :P EDIT: Basically "a" means duro, and a higher duro means that the urethane the wheel is made from is harder, and vice versa. You're kinda right on the wheel size. Bigger wheels grip more, have more traction. But smaller wheels roll faster, have less grip etc etc etc. The only reason I recommended Otang is cause I'm quite biased with my sponsors LOL Try searching the brand Abec 11. They have great wheels, most notably the Gumballs and ZigZags/BigZigs(bigger version). Bearings are what makes the wheel turn, silly. Those go between the trucks and the wheels. Just get cheap ones since your starting off. Yup, you pretty much got it on truck angles. That also explains why the Time Machine has wedged ends, for a higher angled truck, making it turn better. In races though, it's all personal preference. I myself don't like adding wedges to further angle my trucks, I'm fine with it as-is. But some people like de-wedging the back trucks(making it turn less, thus increasing stability at higher speeds) and/or wedging the front to turn better. But you'll get to that muuuuuuch later on anyway. :D -

SO i'm pretty convinced to get an 80a. Dman shipping.. Tomorrow I'll check more longboards with ZigZag Abec 11 80a that I kinda liked because it's Hard and slide more, rite? But harder for Downhills that I'm not getting into so early.
-

Well 80a's the average, so it'll be more tough to slide compared to like, 86a wheels. Well you can virtually slide with any duro with experience, so yeah it's fine. :D Look up the Retro Freeride wheels as well, pretty good for all-around fun skating. I recommend the lemon ones. (82a) (sun) -

I changed my mind. I 'm getting a 83a.
-
Date: Thu, Apr 19 2012 20:30:16
OkOK... I'm gettign a 86a orangtang with Red bones bearing. The question now is.. WTF IS FLEX? my Weight is probably 140. So If I get a Flex that the minimal is 130.. it's going to be STIFF for me.. is it good for what? or bad for what? There is another flexh that the maximum is 170... And minimum is 65... So... Is it good or bad?
-
Date: Wed, Apr 25 2012 05:23:53
Go for the flex that is going to have more weight capacity, I don't know about you but I'm not getting any lighter anytime soon. Go for the one that the max is 170, I don't think you'll put on 40 pounds but who knows. Just don't go for the ones where the max is like 250, you won't be able to bend that shit at all with the weight that you're at.
-
Date: Wed, Apr 25 2012 17:27:08
@tylt THank you man.. I'm going for this one now. But I have another question... Is Arbor a good brand? For Shapes and wheels? http://www.zumiez.com/catalog/product/view/id/214500/category/767/

@Chobi After 58475847854 changes. That's what I've got into. THe Time Machine Paris 180mm Truck. 85a (yep.. 85a) Tsunami. Red Bones Bearing. Any thoughts? $248.95 Total.

Everything's fine cept the Tsunami's, no idea wtf they are. -._-. If you want good slide wheels get Fireball Beasts -
Date: Thu, Apr 26 2012 12:07:53
By the way the time machine has no flex. Which is good since it will be stable at faster speeds. But it's still not a straight up speedboard so you're probably gonna have to get a new deck later on if you're gonna try out some steeper hills
-
Date: Thu, Apr 26 2012 14:51:46
Flex basically makes boards feel better during normal cruising/leisure/commuting, but it WILL fuck you up in higher speeds
-
Date: Fri, Apr 27 2012 02:39:36
@Chobi changed to Never Summer Revolt. Tsunami is good for sliding and lots of people recommended me these and Flashbacks (but didn't have it). Also they recommended me Zigzag for non-slide.

Trust me on this, Never Summer is not worth the money lol Flashbacks good for sliding? Compared to most others, not really. What are those people smoking lolol -
Date: Fri, Apr 27 2012 04:30:17
THose peoples have a lot of experience in Longboarding O.o @Chobi why it's not?
-
Date: Fri, Apr 27 2012 04:40:02
No no flashbacks are fine. But there are better wheels for sliding. Such as otang durians/stimulus. They slide well right out of the box with no need to break in.
-
Date: Fri, Apr 27 2012 04:42:05
Orangtang is overated by the marketing. :x And what shape do you recommend except by the ones that you told me? Why Not The NEver SUmmer? If you give me a decent "why not" I can change my mind and get a 925. or a earthwing supermodel @Chobi
-
Date: Fri, Apr 27 2012 04:51:37
In all honesty with zero bias, 86a Stimulus are the best slide wheels I have ever ridden. Never summer IMO dies pretty fast, the concave of most decks I've tried are all retarded, and the brand name sounds stupid(imo, not that it matters lol.) Those two other options you have are both great, but IMO the 925's better overall, since people actually use that for racing as well. It's a funkier drop speed for people who think the ds' concave is too "simple". It's a great deck, trust me. The supermodel on the other hand, is cheap as hell, looks great, great bang for your buck. But you can't race with it since there's a teeny amount of flex, not that you'd notice it, but you will once you hit higher speeds.
-
Date: Fri, Apr 27 2012 04:56:52
SIlverFish Longboard reviews on Stimulus 86a is 4.1 and Tsunamis is 4.3 Pretty much the name. I don't get the concave being retarted. WTF?! The brand name sounds stupid indeed. @Chobi
-

Epic Holiday wrote: SIlverFish Longboard reviews on Stimulus 86a is 4.1 and Tsunamis is 4.3 Pretty much the name. I don't get the concave being retarted. WTF?! The brand name sounds stupid indeed.
Well that was my honest opinion lol. The concave is just bad imo, that's pretty much it. Compared to let's say, a Killswitch or Drop Speed. None of NS' boards would compare to how great the feel of the concaves of those two alone. It just didn't feel anything special when I rode a few boards. -
Date: Fri, Apr 27 2012 05:04:25
@Chobi btw.. The earthwing is black.
-
Date: Fri, Apr 27 2012 05:10:08
Oh the Supermodel Drop, haven't tried that. The one I tried was the dropthrough. So I'm unsure how that rides. Just get the 925 if I were you. You'll never go wrong with LY. Except the R5. That failed.
-
Date: Fri, Apr 27 2012 05:11:47
Oh and IMO you shouldn't start out with 86a, get the purple ones(83? Or 82a? Forgot. Can't check now I'm in Taipei lol)
-
Date: Fri, Apr 27 2012 05:15:36
83a. Meh Purple so ugly that I don't want to get it unless it's the least option :(
-
Date: Fri, Apr 27 2012 05:18:00
@Chobi Do you have another option for 83 a?
-
Date: Fri, Apr 27 2012 05:18:38
LOL we're the same then. :P I like my wheels in bright colours.
-
Date: Fri, Apr 27 2012 05:19:59
Just get the 86 then. No problem with that. Easier to slide as well.
-
Date: Fri, Apr 27 2012 05:21:24
Stick to the 86a then. No problem with that, plus it slides easier.
-
Date: Fri, Apr 27 2012 05:23:05
I like my wheels in Black or White. Blue, yellow, Green.
-
Date: Fri, Apr 27 2012 05:24:41
Fuck I double posted. Stupid iphone
-
Date: Fri, Apr 27 2012 05:28:44
Ít's the spammer bin man.. Doesn't matter. hmm... I thin I'm getting the Supermodel :x over 925
-
Date: Fri, Apr 27 2012 05:37:39
Alright. Just don't race with it and you'll be fine
-
Date: Fri, Apr 27 2012 05:47:54
If its your first longboard you probably won't need a race deck anyways. You'll just be cruising hills, carving, and learning to ride and have fun more then anything else. And you're going to have a killer board regardless. If you don't like what you get, just save up and change out part by part, its not like it has to be the only parts that you ever have for the board.
-
Date: Fri, Apr 27 2012 05:49:25
@tylt so a Supermodel would be very fine?
-
Date: Fri, Apr 27 2012 05:56:36
If its your first board, then I'd say yes. Chobi speaks from real downhill experience so he is going to be biased towards boards that are more suited for his purposes. If you just want a board to cruise and learn on then the decks you have been picking will work fine. Any of them man, seriously.
-

Okok.. I bought a 9two5 but I still got the Mega Tsunamis! And 180mm Paris Red bones. -

Alright. Good setup man. IMO Paris doesn't suit the 9two5 but oh well. :p I wish you luck on your skating. I'll try those tsunamis when I get some cash lol. By the way, did you get helmet and gloves? Important shit
-

Oh and it's Bones Reds not Red Bones :P
-
Date: Sat, Apr 28 2012 22:06:04
Helmet I didn't get yet because the longboard is still comming. SO I'm buyign it this week. The gloves I will get when I learn to longboard first.

Landyachtz was my first official board sponsor, the customer service there is amazing. :) You can ask them questions regarding technique and even have a chat with them lol. Glad you're enjoying LY. Curious though, what's your stance? Regular/Goofy -
