One thing I tend to see older spinners telling newer spinners is to refrain from power tricks and whatnot and learn linkages instead (everyone has their own opinion ofc). What frustrates me is that I don't know exactly how to learn linkages, and I'm sure other beginner spinners feel the same way. The little linkages I can perform right now are pretty basic and are things I sort of just learned on my own. So, what did you do to learn linkages? Share your personal experience :o I've tried using the BD requests thread, and I guess it was sort of helpful but it was mainly material that was too difficult for me. Please be specific^^ I searched in advance in case you were wondering, haha. sorry if this thread is pointless to you ._. I'd really appreciate hearing your own experiences as a spinner, thank you :D

What i did and still do is find some spinners that i like. And i mean LIKE. That way its actually nice to watch their clips. Then i watch their videos, and copy linkages i like. After i get it down, i try to find a way to sort of alter the linkage to make it harder (or in some cases easier), and, well, i just modify it to fit my liking and style. Another thing i do is just do random shit i never thought of before. Like ill use my nonspinning hand to help my spinnning hand and try some new links, then just practice it without my nonspinning hand until i get it down. So yeah, thats how i personally do it, and you could try it too. But remember to watch videos you actually like, so that way itll be enjoyable at the same time. And yeah, stay away from powertricks and heavyass mofo son'vabeotch mods at an early stage, cause thatll screw you up. Save learning that stuff for later on

lol noob you suck (flames and trolls like hell) jk what i did when I first started spinning was search on youtube for linkages. After that just learned by doing tricks and trying to see what tricks I can do from the finishing position of another trick. hope this helps a bit...

note: i'm not one of those anti-power trick idiots, heh. (obviously? lol) to learn linkages, i got slow-motions/breakdowns from spinners and combos i liked ^^ of course, when you are still early on, it's hard to do most of the stuff, maybe get some stuff from WT07, WC08 (most of which isn't anywhere near as difficult as newer stuff) =\ or maybe use old solos from famous spinners, and try to copy their combos; since copying the exact combos other do is a good way to force you to expand your skills, and makes you learn linkages (i certainly learnt many of my recent linkages/derived them from what i learnt in copying mesi's combos) learn the tricks individually first, then join them together one by one ^^ it's useful to learn linkings which change palm orientation (e.g. shadow 13-23 > pass rev 23-34 > ringaround 34-34), linkings between similar-looking tricks (e.g. shadow 12-13-23-34, around+pass rev sequences etc), and direction changes of various kinds (e.g. ta harmonic, ta ext t1-12 > shadow rev 12-34) when you advance, you'll realise you can learn new linkages more easily, since your fingers are easier to control, you improve at analysing etc there's some simpler combos in breakdown requests (e.g. a breakdown of beji spinning mx for neosa233 JEB upfes, which is simple sonic/pass/around stuff) which you can use, just pick out the easier combos/easier sequences from within the bds you can see my progression gradually (pm me if you want breakdowns)

    Spoilercombo for my friend (august 2009) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFmgw6pMIsk (some linkages based off supawit WT09 R2) FS29 (jan 2010) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCknm5-5HG0 FS33 (april 2010) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=629qN39ogGM FS43 (july 2010) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgHXrq0gXI0 linkage FS (sept 2010) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7i5gbdYT2bQ FS52 vs neo (march 2011) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANuTEwwUqRw WC12 qual (oct 2011) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20E6-PAtXog etcetc

tbh, I've never copy a whole of any combo. Only I do is copy some part or linkage between some tricks that I like. another way to learn the advance linkage is create your own linkage. Don't care which have been created by other spinner. Just think and try a new linkage. It'll improve your creativity.

I have the same problem. I guess learning a lot of different tricks helps because then you can think of different tricks to link together. I think we will get better eventually.

A simple way to create new linkages is to just stop and think of what tricks you can do after another. Say, for example, you do a twisted sonic 23-12 > bak 12. After that bak, think about what tricks you know that you could possibly link into. I could either do a reverse charge T1 > FL TA or maybe an index around. For me, this method helps a lot when making combos.

Like most things, to get to simple stuff, look to the beginning. All things get more complex with time, psing included. Look to the really old solos of original JEB and spinners of that nature. Its a good way to get simple, flashy links in no time. Just remember, the more links of a certain style you learn, the more your personal created links will lean towards that style. You don't like JEB style or something, try to refrain from links of that style. Also, look at Erirors videos, esp. his slomo of his first training combo. Have fun!!!

The simplest,...you watch other people's instructions and follow... after a time, you can manually create your linkage Sr for the limit English

@i.suk but sometimes when the video quality is poor its hard to see what trick is the person doing even tho in slomo.. especially when there is no specific breakdown..

Really you should just learn whatever you want to learn. Whether it's linkages or a power trick, think of the tricks as your vocabulary and the linkages as your sentences, I recommend learning linkages because they usually force you to practice a trick in a different position than how you normally do it, and there are often linkages with tricks you don't yet know how to do, which helps expand your trick list as well. I personally learned most of my linkages from gatherings or spinning with other people, but I also learned a few from watching videos in slow-mo as well. OFC there are a lot of helpful videos on youtube as well: Wind's beginners linkages

Just use your imagination and think of stuff you could do after a certain trick. even if it is impossible to do atm, just think of it and work on it. i do it that way all the time. I didn't watch other spinners videos for linkages and stuff, just play around and see what happens.

I'll start looking into everyone's advice one by one. and yea, I think my biggest struggle is changing palm orientation/lack of links that change palm orientation. thanks everyone :D

You can try spinning a lighter mod than what you are used to, for.me that worked during the beginning but I don't if it works for all. You must try to forcefully link tricks and try out other variations of them. :/
